Proverbs 12, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.

If you embrace learning, you love knowledge. But if you despise correction, you're acting foolishly.

2

A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.

A kind-hearted person earns God's love, but those with evil intentions face His judgment.

3

A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.

Evil deeds won't secure a man's future, but the foundation of a good person remains unshaken.

4

A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

A good woman brings joy and honor to her husband, but a disgraceful one brings him nothing but deep pain and sorrow.

5

The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.

The pure-hearted think with honesty, while the wicked are filled with lies.

6

The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

The wicked speak with intentions to harm, but the honest will use their words to save.

7

The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.

Evil doers will fall and vanish, but the homes of the good will remain strong.

8

A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.

A person's wisdom earns them respect, but those with twisted intentions are looked down upon.

9

He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.

It's better to be humble and have help, than to be arrogant and starve.

10

A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

A good person cares deeply for their animal's wellbeing, but even the kindest acts of a wicked person can be harsh and unkind.

11

He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding.

Those who work their land will have plenty to eat, but those who chase after empty dreams lack wisdom.

12

The wicked desireth the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit.

Evil hearts crave the traps of wickedness, but the core of good souls produces kindness.

13

The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.

Those who speak evil will be trapped by their own words, but the honest will escape from hardship.

14

A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence of a man’s hands shall be rendered unto him.

A man will find joy in the positive words he speaks, and he will receive the rewards of his own hard work.

15

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.

A fool believes he's always right, but a wise person listens to advice.

16

A fool’s wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.

A fool quickly shows his anger, but a wise man hides his embarrassment.

17

He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.

When you speak the truth, you radiate integrity. But if you lie, you only spread deceit.

18

There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

Some words can cut like a sharp sword, but the wise speak healing and comfort.

19

The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

Honest words will always stand strong, but lies are fleeting and temporary.

20

Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy.

Those who plot evil are filled with lies, but those who promote peace experience true happiness.

21

There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.

Goodness will shield the righteous, protecting them from harm. However, those who choose wickedness will find themselves consumed by trouble.

22

Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

God despises dishonesty, but those who speak the truth bring Him joy.

23

A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

A wise person keeps their knowledge to themselves, but a fool can't help but share their foolish thoughts.

24

The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.

Those who work hard will rule, but the lazy will end up in forced labor.

25

Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.

A heavy heart can weigh a person down, but a kind word can bring joy.

26

The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.

A good person shines brighter than those around them, but the wicked are led astray by their own ways.

27

The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.

A lazy person doesn't bother to cook what he catches, but a hardworking person values what he earns.

28

In the way of righteousness is life: and in the pathway thereof there is no death.

Living a righteous life brings vitality and joy; there's no room for death on such a path.
