Proverbs 15, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

A gentle reply soothes anger, but harsh words ignite fury.

2

The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.

Wise people speak with thoughtful words, but fools just spew nonsense.

3

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

God's gaze reaches everywhere, witnessing both the good and bad deeds we do.

4

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.

A kind word can nourish the soul, but harsh words can break the spirit.

5

A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

A foolish person ignores his father's advice, but a wise one appreciates correction.

6

In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

In the home of the good, there is abundant joy and wealth. But in the earnings of the wicked, there lies turmoil.

7

The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so.

Wise people share wisdom through their words, but fools keep their ignorance within their hearts.

8

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

God despises the offerings of the wicked, but he finds joy in the sincere prayers of the righteous.

9

The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the LORD: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.

God detests the path of the wicked, but cherishes those who pursue goodness.

10

Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.

Those who abandon the right path find discipline hard to bear; those who hate being corrected will die.

11

Hell and destruction are before the LORD: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?

God sees all, even hell and destruction. So, imagine how much more He understands the hearts of people.

12

A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.

A cynic doesn't appreciate criticism, nor seeks wisdom from the wise.

13

A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

A joyful heart radiates happiness, but a heart filled with sadness shatters the spirit.

14

The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.

A wise person's heart yearns for knowledge, but a fool's mouth feasts on nonsense.

15

All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

Life is tough for those in pain, but a joyful heart lives in constant celebration.

16

Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith.

It's more peaceful to have less and respect God, than to have immense wealth accompanied by problems.

17

Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.

A simple meal shared with love is far more satisfying than a feast eaten in hatred.

18

A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

An angry person fuels conflict, but a patient one soothes it.

19

The way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made plain.

The lazy man's path is filled with painful obstacles, but the path of the good-hearted is clear and straightforward.

20

A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.

A smart child brings joy to his father, but a foolish one shows disrespect to his mother.

21

Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a man of understanding walketh uprightly.

Ignorance brings happiness to those lacking wisdom, but a wise man walks with integrity.

22

Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

Without guidance, plans fail; but with many advisors, they succeed.

23

A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!

A man finds happiness in his thoughtful responses, and a timely word can be such a blessing!

24

The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

For the wise, the path of life leads upward, steering them clear of hell below.

25

The LORD will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.

God will topple the arrogant, but He will protect and secure the boundaries of the widow.

26

The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

God despises the evil thoughts of the wicked, but He delights in the sincere words of the pure-hearted.

27

He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.

Those who crave wealth bring chaos to their own home; but those who despise bribes will lead a peaceful life.

28

The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

A good person thinks before speaking, but an evil one spews out harm without thought.

29

The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

God is far from those who do wrong, yet He is always close and attentive to the prayers of the good-hearted.

30

The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat.

Seeing light brings joy to the heart, and hearing good news strengthens the soul.

31

The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.

Those who listen to life's corrections dwell among the wise.

32

He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

If you ignore advice, you're hurting yourself. But if you listen to correction, you gain wisdom.

33

The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

Respecting God is the first step towards gaining wisdom; and before you can be truly honored, you must first learn to be humble.
