Proverbs 9, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
Wisdom has crafted her own sanctuary, skillfully carving out its seven strong supports.
She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
She has lovingly prepared her feast, skillfully blended her wine, and carefully set her table with great anticipation.
She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
She has dispatched her helpers, calling out from the city's tallest points.
Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
If you're naive, come this way. If you lack wisdom, she calls out to you.
Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
Join me, savor the bread I offer, and sip the wine I've lovingly prepared.
Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
Avoid the company of the unwise, embrace life, and follow the path of wisdom.
He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
Correcting a mocker only brings you humiliation; pointing out the wrong in a wicked person only stains your reputation.
Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
Don't correct a mocker, they might despise you. Guide a wise person, and they'll appreciate you.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
Guide a smart person, and they'll become even smarter. Teach a fair person, and their knowledge will grow.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
Respecting and acknowledging God is the first step towards wisdom, and understanding His sacred nature brings true enlightenment.
For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
Through me, your days will overflow with joy, and your life will be blessed with many more years.
If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
If you choose wisdom, it's for your own benefit. But if you choose to mock, you'll face the consequences alone.
A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.
An ignorant woman is loud and disruptive; she lacks wisdom and understanding.
For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
She patiently waits at her home's entrance, perched on a seat overlooking the city's heights, filled with anticipation and hope.
To call passengers who go right on their ways:
To beckon travelers steadfast on their journey:
Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
If you're naive, come this way; if you lack wisdom, she calls out to you.
Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
Illicit pleasures may seem enticing, and hidden indulgences may feel delightful.
But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.
He is unaware that death lurks there; and that her visitors are plunged into the darkest abyss of hell.
