John 15, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

I am the genuine source of life, and my Father is the careful gardener.

2

Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

If you're not productive, you'll be removed. But if you are, you'll be pruned to become even more fruitful.

3

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

You are now purified, thanks to the words I've shared with you.

4

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

Stay connected to me, and I'll stay connected to you. Just like a branch can't produce fruit on its own without the vine, you can't thrive without staying connected to me.

5

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

I am the life-giving vine, and you are my extensions, my branches. If you stay connected to me, and I to you, you will flourish and bear abundant fruit. But without me, you can achieve nothing.

6

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

If one doesn't stay connected with me, they're like a dried up branch. People collect such branches and throw them into the fire to burn.

7

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Stay connected with me, let my teachings fill your heart, and whatever you wish for, it will come true.

8

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

My Father's heart swells with joy when you thrive and grow; in doing so, you truly become my followers.

9

As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

Just as God has showered me with His love, I too have loved you deeply. Please, keep living in this love.

10

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

If you follow my teachings, you'll live in my love, just as I've followed my Father's teachings and live in His love.

11

These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

I've shared these words with you so that my happiness can live within you, and your happiness can be complete.

12

This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

My only request is this: Cherish each other deeply, just as I have cherished you.

13

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

There's no greater expression of love than someone willing to sacrifice their life for their friends.

14

Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

You are my cherished friends, when you follow my guidance with love and respect.

15

Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

From now on, I won't call you servants, because a servant doesn't understand his master's actions. Instead, I call you friends, because I've shared with you everything I've learned from my Father.

16

Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

It wasn't you who picked me, but I who picked you. I've set you on a path to create lasting good in the world. And remember, whatever you ask for in my name, the Father will grant it to you.

17

These things I command you, that ye love one another.

I urge you, with all my heart, to cherish and care for each other.

18

If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

If you feel shunned by the world, remember, it first turned its back on me before you.

19

If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

If you belonged to the world, it would embrace you as its own. But you're not part of it - I've handpicked you out of it. And that's why the world dislikes you.

20

Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

Recall my words to you: No servant is above their master. If they've treated me harshly, they'll do the same to you. If they've respected my teachings, they'll respect yours too.

21

But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.

They'll do all this to you because of me, simply because they don't understand the one who sent me.

22

If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.

If I hadn't shown up and revealed the truth, they wouldn't realize their wrongdoings. But now, they can't hide their mistakes anymore.

23

He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

Whoever despises me, despises my Father too, with a heart full of bitterness.

24

If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

If I hadn't performed miracles that no one else could, they wouldn't be guilty. But now, they've witnessed these miracles and still choose to despise both me and my Father.

25

But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

This is happening so that the prophecy in their law can be fulfilled: They despised me for no reason.

26

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

When the Comforter arrives, sent by me from the Father, the Spirit of truth born from the Father, he will vouch for me.

27

And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

You too will share your experiences, for you've been with me since the start.
