John 5, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Following this, a Jewish festival took place; Jesus, filled with anticipation, journeyed towards Jerusalem.

2

Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

In Jerusalem, near the sheep market, there's a pool named Bethesda, surrounded by five porches.

3

In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

A vast crowd of people, weak, blind, and broken, lingered there, yearning for the stirring of the water.

4

For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

Every so often, an angel would descend into the pool, stirring the water. The first person to step into the rippling water after this divine visit was healed of any illness they had.

5

And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

A man was there, burdened with a debilitating illness for a heartbreaking span of thirty-eight years.

6

When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

Seeing the man lying there, Jesus felt his long suffering. He gently asked him, "Do you want to be healed?"

7

The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

The helpless man replied with a heavy heart, "Sir, I have no one to help me into the healing waters when they stir. Every time I try, someone else gets there before me."

8

Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

With a compassionate voice, Jesus told him, "Stand up, pick up your mat, and start walking."

9

And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

Instantly, the man was healed. He picked up his bed, walked, all on the quiet Sabbath day, filled with awe and gratitude.

10

The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

The Jews, in their stern voices, told the healed man, "It's the Sabbath, you shouldn't be carrying your bed."

11

He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

The one who healed me, instructed me, "Pick up your bed and walk."

12

Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

They questioned him, "Who was the man that told you, 'Pick up your mat and walk'?"

13

And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

The man who was healed didn't know who had healed him. Jesus had slipped away unnoticed because of the large crowd in that place.

14

Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

Later, Jesus found the man in the temple and gently told him, "You're healed now. Try not to sin again, or something worse might happen to you."

15

The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

The man left, filled with joy and gratitude, and shared with the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him completely.

16

And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

The Jews, upset and angered by Jesus' actions on the sacred Sabbath, relentlessly pursued him, intending to end his life.

17

But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

Jesus responded, "My Father never stops working, and so do I."

18

Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

The Jews were increasingly angered, wanting to end his life. He had not only violated the Sabbath, but also claimed God as his Father, implying he was on par with God.

19

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

Jesus responded, "Truly, I tell you, the Son can't do anything on his own. He only does what he sees his Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son does too."

20

For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

The Father deeply loves the Son, revealing to him all his actions. He will even show him more amazing deeds, leaving you in awe.

21

For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

Just as the Father brings the dead back to life, the Son too has the power to give life to whomever he chooses.

22

For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

The Father doesn't judge anyone, instead, He entrusts all decisions to the Son.

23

That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

Everyone should respect the Son just as they respect the Father. If you don't respect the Son, you're not respecting the Father who sent him.

24

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Truly, I assure you, if you listen to my teachings and trust in the one who sent me, you will have eternal life. You won't face judgement, instead, you've moved from death to life.

25

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

Truly, I tell you, the time is near, even upon us, when those who have passed will hear the voice of God's Son. And those who listen will find life again.

26

For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

Just as the Father embodies life, He has lovingly bestowed this same life within His Son.

27

And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

He has granted him the power to make fair decisions, for he is the Son of man, filled with wisdom and compassion.

28

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

Don't be surprised: a time will come when even those resting in their graves will hear His call.

29

And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Those who have lived righteously will awaken to a life of joy, while those who have chosen evil will face severe consequences.

30

I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

On my own, I'm powerless. I make fair decisions based on what I hear. I don't pursue my own desires, but rather, I strive to fulfill the intentions of the one who sent me.

31

If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

If I only vouch for myself, my words hold no truth.

32

There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

Someone else vouches for me, and I am certain that his testimony about me is genuine.

33

Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

You reached out to John, and he passionately confirmed the truth.

34

But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

I don't rely on human approval, my words are meant to guide you towards salvation.

35

He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

He was a radiant, glowing beacon of hope, and for a while, you all found joy in his illuminating presence.

36

But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

John's testimony about me is significant, but there's an even more powerful proof: the tasks that my Father entrusted me to complete. The very actions I perform are the evidence that my Father sent me.

37

And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

The Father who sent me has personally vouched for me. But you've never truly listened to His voice or seen His form.

38

And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

You don't carry His message in your hearts, for you don't trust the one He sent.

39

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Explore the Bible passionately; it's where you believe you'll find everlasting life, and it's the very book that speaks about me.

40

And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

You refuse to come to me, even though I offer you life.

41

I receive not honour from men.

I don't seek praise from people.

42

But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

I see clearly, you lack the divine love of God in your hearts.

43

I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

I arrived representing my Father, yet you rejected me. But if someone else comes, promoting themselves, you'll welcome them.

44

How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

How can you truly have faith, if you only seek approval from each other, and not the recognition that comes solely from God?

45

Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

Don't worry, I won't point fingers at you before God. But remember, Moses, whom you believe in, might hold you accountable.

46

For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.

If you had trusted Moses, you would trust me too, because he wrote about me.

47

But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

If you can't trust his written words, how can you trust what I say?
