John 4, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

When therefore the LORD knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

When the LORD realized that the Pharisees had heard about Jesus attracting and baptizing more followers than John, He felt a deep concern.

2

(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

Even though Jesus didn't personally baptize, his disciples did, filled with reverence and devotion.

3

He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

He bid farewell to Judaea, his heart heavy, and once again sought solace in the familiar landscapes of Galilee.

4

And he must needs go through Samaria.

He absolutely had to pass through Samaria.

5

Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

He then arrived at a city in Samaria, known as Sychar, close to the land Jacob gifted to his son Joseph.

6

Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

Jacob's well was nearby. Jesus, exhausted from his travels, took a seat on the well. It was around noon.

7

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

A Samaritan woman approached to collect water. Jesus, with a gentle voice, asked her, "May I have a drink?"

8

(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

His disciples had left him alone, journeying to the town to purchase food.

9

Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

The Samaritan woman asked him, surprised, "Why would you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink? Jews and Samaritans don't interact."

10

Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

Jesus responded, "If you truly understood God's gift and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you water that gives life."

11

The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

The woman questioned him, "Sir, you have no bucket and the well is deep. How can you possibly have this life-giving water?"

12

Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

Are you really more significant than our ancestor Jacob, who gifted us this well and even drank from it himself, along with his children and livestock?

13

Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

Jesus gently told her, "Anyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again."

14

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Whoever drinks the water I provide will never be thirsty again. It will become a source within them, giving them eternal life.

15

The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

The woman pleaded with him, "Sir, please give me this water, so I won't be thirsty or need to keep coming here to draw water."

16

Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

Jesus gently told her, "Please, go fetch your husband and return here."

17

The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

The woman responded, her voice tinged with sadness, "I'm without a husband." Jesus, with a gentle nod of understanding, replied, "Indeed, you speak the truth, you have no husband."

18

For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

You've been married five times, and the man you're with now isn't your husband. You spoke the truth in admitting this.

19

The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

The woman said to him, "Sir, I can sense that you're a prophet."

20

Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

Our ancestors revered the divine on this hill, yet you insist that Jerusalem is the only rightful place for worship.

21

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

Jesus gently told her, "Trust me, dear lady, a time is coming when you won't need to be in this mountain or Jerusalem to worship God."

22

Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

You're worshipping something you don't understand. We, on the other hand, are fully aware of what we worship, because salvation comes from the Jews.

23

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

The time is coming, in fact, it's already here, when genuine believers will honor God with sincere hearts and truthful spirits. God is looking for such people to adore Him.

24

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

God is a divine energy, and those who adore Him should do so with genuine hearts and honesty.

25

The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

The woman said to him, "I'm aware that the Messiah, known as Christ, is coming. When he arrives, he'll reveal everything to us."

26

Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

Jesus gently assured her, "It's me, the one speaking to you."

27

And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

His disciples arrived, amazed to see him conversing with a woman. Yet, none dared to ask, "What are you looking for?" or "Why are you speaking with her?"

28

The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

The woman, abandoning her water jug, hurried back to the city. With a heart full of excitement, she told the men,

29

Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

Come, meet a man who knows my entire life story, isn't he the Messiah?

30

Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

They left the city, their hearts drawn towards him, and found their way to his presence.

31

In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.

Meanwhile, his followers pleaded with him, saying, "Teacher, please have something to eat."

32

But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

He gently told them, "I have sustenance you can't even imagine."

33

Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?

In confusion, the disciples asked each other, "Did anyone bring him something to eat?"

34

Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

Jesus told them, "My purpose and fulfillment come from doing the work of the one who sent me, and completing it."

35

Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

Don't say, "We still have four months till harvest." Look around you! The fields are ripe and ready to be harvested right now.

36

And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

The one who harvests is rewarded and collects the blessings of everlasting life. This allows both the sower and the harvester to share in the joy together.

37

And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.

Indeed, the truth is, one person plants the seed, while another enjoys the harvest.

38

I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

I guided you to benefit from the work you didn't do; others did the hard work, and you simply enjoyed the fruits of their efforts.

39

And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

Many people in that city trusted him because of the woman's heartfelt testimony, "He knew everything I've ever done."

40

So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.

When the Samaritans met him, they pleaded for him to stay. Touched by their sincerity, he stayed with them for two days.

41

And many more believed because of his own word;

Many more found faith, moved by His personal testimony.

42

And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

They told the woman, "We now believe, not just because of your words, but because we've heard him ourselves. We know for sure, he is truly the Christ, the one who saves the world."

43

Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.

After a couple of days, he left that place and journeyed towards Galilee, filled with anticipation.

44

For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

Jesus himself acknowledged, feeling a pang of sadness, that a prophet often goes unrecognized and unappreciated in their own homeland.

45

Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.

When he arrived in Galilee, the locals warmly welcomed him. They had witnessed his miraculous deeds in Jerusalem during the festival, as they too had attended it.

46

So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.

Jesus returned to Cana in Galilee, the place where He'd transformed water into wine. There, a distressed nobleman, whose son was gravely ill in Capernaum, awaited Him.

47

When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.

Upon hearing that Jesus had arrived from Judaea to Galilee, he rushed to meet him. With a desperate plea in his voice and fear in his heart for his dying son, he begged Jesus to come and heal his child.

48

Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

Jesus, with a hint of sadness, told him, "Unless you witness miracles, you won't have faith."

49

The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.

The nobleman pleaded with him, "Please, hurry before my child breathes his last."

50

Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.

Jesus told the man, "Go on, your son is alive." Trusting Jesus' words, the man left with a hopeful heart.

51

And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.

As he descended, his servants rushed to meet him, their faces alight with joy, "Your son, he lives!" they exclaimed.

52

Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.

He asked them when the healing began. They replied, "Yesterday, at seven, his fever broke."

53

So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.

With a heart full of realization, the father understood that it was the exact moment when Jesus had assured him, "Your son lives." His faith deepened, and so did the faith of his entire household.

54

This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.

For the second time, Jesus, having journeyed from Judaea to Galilee, performed another awe-inspiring miracle.
