John 3, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

A Pharisee named Nicodemus, a respected Jewish leader, was a man of significance.

2

The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

In the quiet of the night, he approached Jesus, his voice filled with awe and respect. "Master," he said, "we're certain you're a divine teacher. No one could perform such miracles unless God is with him."

3

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Jesus responded with deep sincerity, "Truly, I tell you, unless one experiences a spiritual rebirth, they won't be able to comprehend God's kingdom."

4

Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

Nicodemus asked him, "How can an old man be born again? Can he really go back into his mother's womb and be born a second time?"

5

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Jesus passionately declared, "Truly, I tell you, unless one is reborn through water and the Spirit, they cannot experience God's kingdom."

6

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

What comes from the physical body is just that, physical; but what comes from the soul, is spiritual.

7

Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

Don't be surprised when I tell you, you need a fresh start, a new beginning.

8

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

The wind moves freely, you hear its sound but can't predict its path or origin. Similarly, those guided by the Spirit operate, unpredictable yet purposeful.

9

Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

Nicodemus, filled with confusion and curiosity, asked him, "How can all this be possible?"

10

Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

Jesus, with a hint of surprise, asked him, "You're a teacher of Israel, yet you don't understand these things?"

11

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

Truly, I assure you, we only speak of what we know and have witnessed, yet you still don't accept our testimony.

12

If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

If you struggle to trust in the tangible things I've shared, how can you grasp the divine truths I wish to reveal?

13

And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

No one has ever reached heaven, except the one who descended from it, the Son of man, who resides there.

14

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

Just as Moses raised the snake in the desert for all to see and be healed, so too must the Son of Man be elevated for everyone's salvation.

15

That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Anyone who trusts in Him will not be lost, but will live forever.

16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

God's love for the world was so immense, He gifted us His only Son. Anyone who trusts in Him will not face death, but enjoy a life that never ends.

17

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

God didn't send His Son to judge us, but to offer us a path to salvation.

18

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Those who trust in Him are free from judgment. But those who don't, they're already judged, for they've rejected God's one and only Son.

19

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

This is the sad truth: Light has arrived in our world, but people preferred the darkness because their actions were wrong.

20

For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

Anyone who does wrong despises the truth, and avoids it, fearing their actions will be exposed.

21

But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Those who live truthfully are drawn to the light, for it reveals their actions are guided by God.

22

After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

Following these events, Jesus and his followers journeyed to Judaea. There, they spent time together, and Jesus performed baptisms.

23

And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

John was performing baptisms in Aenon, near Salim, where there was an abundance of water. People flocked to him, eager to be baptized.

24

For John was not yet cast into prison.

John had not yet been thrown into jail.

25

Then there arose a question between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purifying.

A disagreement bubbled up between some followers of John and the Jews regarding religious cleansing rituals.

26

And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

They approached John, saying, "Teacher, the man you endorsed across the Jordan, he's now baptizing, and everyone is flocking to him."

27

John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.

John responded with conviction, "We can gain nothing unless it is a gift bestowed upon us from the heavens above."

28

Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

You can testify, I've always said, I'm not the Messiah, but simply his herald.

29

He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

The one with the bride is the groom. His friend, who stands by and hears him, is filled with joy at the sound of the groom's voice. This is the source of my complete happiness.

30

He must increase, but I must decrease.

His light must shine brighter, while mine must dim.

31

He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

Those who come from heaven are superior to all. Those who are from the earth are ordinary and talk about earthly things. But those who come from heaven are the greatest.

32

And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.

He shares his experiences and truths, yet no one accepts his words.

33

He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.

Whoever accepts His message confirms with their heart that God is indeed real and truthful.

34

For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

The one sent by God speaks His words, for God doesn't limit the amount of His Spirit given to him.

35

The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

The Father adores the Son, entrusting him with everything.

36

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Those who trust in the Son will experience eternal joy, while those who don't will miss out on life's true beauty, facing God's displeasure instead.
