John 21, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.

Following these events, Jesus revealed himself once more to his disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. He did so in a manner that was unmistakable.

2

There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.

Simon Peter, Thomas, also known as Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee's sons, and two more disciples were all gathered together.

3

Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.

Simon Peter announced, "I'm going fishing." They responded, "We're coming with you." Without delay, they boarded a boat. Despite their efforts, they didn't catch a single fish that night.

4

But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.

As dawn broke, Jesus appeared on the shoreline. Unaware, the disciples didn't recognize him.

5

Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.

Jesus asked them gently, "Kids, do you have any food?" They replied sadly, "No, we don't."

6

And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

He told them, "Throw your net on the ship's right side and you'll find plenty." They did as he said, and suddenly, their net was so full of fish they couldn't even pull it back in.

7

Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.

The disciple Jesus cherished told Peter, "It's the Lord!" Upon hearing this, Peter, who was fishing bare, quickly put on his coat and dove into the sea with joy and anticipation.

8

And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.

The other disciples arrived nearby in a small boat, not far from shore, pulling a net teeming with fish.

9

As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.

As soon as they stepped onto the shore, they were greeted by the warm sight of a glowing coal fire. Fresh fish and bread were invitingly laid out, ready to be savored.

10

Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.

Jesus told them, "Please bring the fish you've just caught."

11

Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.

Simon Peter, filled with awe, hauled in a net brimming with a staggering 153 large fish. Despite the immense load, the net remained miraculously intact.

12

Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.

Jesus warmly invited them, "Join me for a meal." None of his disciples dared to question his identity, they knew in their hearts he was the Lord.

13

Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.

Then Jesus arrived, gently took some bread and fish, and lovingly shared it with them.

14

This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.

For the third time since his miraculous resurrection, Jesus revealed himself to his disciples, filling their hearts with awe and joy.

15

So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

After they had eaten, Jesus turned to Simon Peter and asked, "Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me more than these others do?" Simon Peter replied, "Yes, Lord, you know I love you." Jesus then told him, "Take care of my lambs."

16

He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

He asked him again, "Simon, son of Jonas, do you truly love me?" Simon replied, "Yes, Lord, you know I do." Then he told him, "Take care of my flock."

17

He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

For the third time, He asked, "Simon, son of Jonas, do you truly love me?" Peter felt a pang of sadness, "Lord, you know everything, you know I love you," he replied. Jesus simply said, "Then take care of my sheep."

18

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.

Truly, I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and went wherever you pleased. But when you grow old, you'll extend your hands and someone else will dress you, guiding you to places you'd rather not go.

19

This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

He hinted at how his death would honor God. After saying this, he simply told him, "Follow me."

20

Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

Peter turned around and saw the disciple Jesus deeply cared for following him. This was the same disciple who had leaned on Jesus during dinner, asking, "Lord, who will betray you?"

21

Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?

Peter, upon seeing him, turned to Jesus and asked with curiosity and concern, "Lord, what is this man's destiny?"

22

Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

Jesus told him, "Even if I want him to wait until I return, why should that concern you? Just focus on following me."

23

Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?

The rumor spread among the believers that this disciple wouldn't die. But Jesus didn't promise him immortality, He simply said, "If I want him to wait until I return, why should that concern you?"

24

This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.

This disciple, who passionately shares and writes about these events, we trust his words to be the absolute truth.

25

And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

Jesus did so many incredible things, that if we tried to write them all down, there wouldn't be enough space in the entire world for all the books. Amen.
