John 16, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
I've shared these words with you, so you won't feel hurt or upset.
They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
They will banish you from their churches, believing that by harming you, they're serving God.
And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
They will act this way towards you, simply because they don't understand or know God or me.
But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
I've shared these truths with you so that when the moment arrives, you'll recall my words. I didn't mention them at first because I was there with you.
But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
Now, I return to the one who called me, yet none of you question where I'm headed.
But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
My words have filled your heart with sadness.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Honestly, it's best for you that I leave. If I don't, the Helper won't come to you. But if I go, I'll send him your way.
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
When he arrives, he will gently correct the world's wrongs, guiding us towards righteousness and fair judgment.
Of sin, because they believe not on me;
They sin because they lack faith in me.
Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
About being just, because I'm returning to my Heavenly Father, and you won't see me again;
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
Regarding judgment, for even the ruler of this world has been held accountable.
I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
I have so much more to share with you, but it's too heavy for you to handle right now.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
When the Spirit of truth arrives, it will guide you to understand all truths. It won't speak for its own sake, but will convey what it hears. It will reveal to you the future.
He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
He will honor me, for he will take what is mine and reveal it to you with love and understanding.
All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Everything the Father owns is also mine. That's why I said, He will reveal to you what is mine.
A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
Soon, you won't be able to see me. But after a short time, you will see me again because I'm returning to my Father.
Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
Some of his followers quietly asked each other, "What does he mean when he says, 'Soon, you won't see me, but then soon after, you will see me because I am returning to the Father'?"
They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
So they asked, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand his words."
Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
Jesus sensed their curiosity and asked, "Are you wondering about my words - 'Soon you won't see me, but after a while, you will'?"
Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
Truly, I tell you, you will cry and grieve, while the world celebrates. You'll feel sad, but your sadness will transform into happiness.
A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
A woman in labor feels pain, for her time has come. But once she holds her newborn, she forgets her suffering, overwhelmed with joy that a new life has entered the world.
And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
You may be feeling sad now, but I promise, we'll meet again. When that happens, your heart will overflow with joy, a joy that no one can ever steal from you.
And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
On that day, you won't need to question me. Truly, I assure you, whatever you ask from God, in my name, He will grant it to you.
Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
Up until now, you haven't asked for anything in my name. Go ahead, ask, and you will receive, filling your heart with pure joy.
These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
I've been talking to you in riddles, but soon, I won't need to. I'll be able to show you clearly what the Father is like.
At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
On that day, you'll seek help in my name. But understand this, I won't need to plead with the Father on your behalf.
For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
God Himself cherishes you deeply, for your love for me and your faith in my divine origin.
I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
I was born from the Father, brought into this world. Now, I must leave this world and return to my Father.
His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
His followers told him, "Finally, you're speaking clearly to us, not in riddles."
Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
We're confident that you understand everything, without needing anyone to question you. This assures us that you truly are from God.
Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
With a gentle voice, Jesus looked at them and asked, "Do you truly have faith now?"
Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
The time is here, and you will all go your separate ways, leaving me by myself. But I won't be alone, for God is with me.
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
I've shared these words with you so that you may find tranquility in me. Life may bring you trials and hardships, but stay positive and hopeful, for I have triumphed over the world's challenges.
