1 Chronicles 10, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

The Philistines fiercely attacked Israel. Overwhelmed with fear, the Israelites retreated, tragically losing many lives on the slopes of Mount Gilboa.

2

And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.

The Philistines relentlessly pursued Saul and his sons. Tragically, they killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua - Saul's beloved sons.

3

And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him, and he was wounded of the archers.

Saul was deeply overwhelmed in the fierce battle, struck and injured by the arrows of his enemies.

4

Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

Saul, in fear and desperation, pleaded with his aide, "Unsheathe your sword and end my life, before our enemies get to me." But his aide was too terrified to comply. So, Saul, in his despair, took a sword and impaled himself.

5

And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.

When Saul's loyal squire saw his king lifeless, he was consumed by grief. In his despair, he too fell upon his sword, ending his own life.

6

So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.

Saul and his three sons, along with his entire household, tragically met their end together.

7

And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

When the men of Israel in the valley saw their leaders, Saul and his sons, dead and their own ranks fleeing in fear, they too abandoned their homes in panic. The Philistines then moved in, taking over their deserted cities.

8

And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa.

The next day, when the Philistines came to loot the dead, they discovered Saul and his sons lifeless on Mount Gilboa.

9

And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people.

After they had cruelly stripped him bare, they seized his head and his protective gear. They then sent these to the Philistine territories, spreading the news to their false gods and their people.

10

And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.

They displayed his armor in their god's shrine, and hung his severed head in Dagon's temple, with a chilling sense of triumph and reverence.

11

And when all Jabeshgilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

When the people of Jabeshgilead learned of the atrocities the Philistines had inflicted on Saul, they were deeply shaken.

12

They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

Brave hearts rose, carrying Saul and his sons' bodies. They journeyed to Jabesh, laid their bones to rest beneath an oak, and mourned in fasting for a week.

13

So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;

Saul perished because he betrayed God, ignoring His commands. He also sought guidance from a spiritual medium, which was against God's will.

14

And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

He didn't seek guidance from God, so the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David, Jesse's son.
