Deuteronomy 18, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance.

The Levite priests, belonging to the tribe of Levi, won't share in Israel's material wealth. Instead, they'll sustain themselves on God's sacred offerings and his spiritual legacy.

2

Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.

They won't share in their siblings' earthly possessions; their true wealth lies in the Lord's love, as He promised.

3

And this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw.

The people offering a sacrifice, be it an ox or sheep, must give the priest his rightful share - the shoulder, both cheeks, and the stomach.

4

The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him.

Give the priest the first of your grain, your wine and your oil, and the first wool you shear from your sheep.

5

For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.

God has handpicked him from all your groups, to serve in His name, him and his descendants forever.

6

And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the LORD shall choose;

If a Levite, from any corner of Israel, leaves his temporary home and comes with a heart full of desire to the place God has chosen,

7

Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD.

He will serve with devotion, in God's name, just like his fellow Levites who stand faithfully before the Lord.

8

They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his patrimony.

Everyone will receive equal shares of food, in addition to what they earn from selling their inherited property.

9

When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

When you arrive in the land that God has given you, don't adopt the terrible practices of its previous inhabitants.

10

There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.

No one among you should sacrifice their son or daughter in the fire, use magic, read omens to predict the future, cast spells, or practice witchcraft.

11

Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

No one among you should cast spells, consult with spirits, practice sorcery, or communicate with the dead.

12

For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

Everyone who does such things is detestable to the Lord. And it's because of these detestable practices that God is driving those nations out ahead of you.

13

Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.

Be wholehearted and blameless in your relationship with God.

14

For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.

The nations you'll conquer may listen to fortune tellers and diviners, but you, God doesn't allow you to do so.

15

The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

Your God will bring forth a Prophet from among you, a brother, just like me. Listen to him.

16

According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.

In line with your plea to God at Horeb during the gathering, you begged not to hear God's voice or see His mighty fire again, fearing it might end your life.

17

And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.

The Lord acknowledged to me, their words were indeed wise and true.

18

I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

I will uplift a Prophet from their own kin, similar to you, filling his mouth with my words. He will passionately convey every command I give him.

19

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

If anyone chooses to ignore the words he speaks in my name, I myself will hold them to account.

20

But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.

Any prophet who dares to utter words in my name that I did not instruct, or who speaks on behalf of other gods, will face death.

21

And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?

If you're wondering in your heart, "How can we tell if the Lord didn't really say this?"

22

When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

If a prophet claims to speak for God, but his predictions don't come true, then God didn't really speak through him. He was just being presumptuous. Don't fear him.
