Deuteronomy 23, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD.

Anyone who has been castrated or suffered a severe injury to their reproductive organs cannot join the Lord's assembly.

2

A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD.

An illegitimate child shall not be part of God's assembly; not even after ten generations shall they be welcomed into God's community.

3

An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation shall they not enter into the congregation of the LORD for ever:

No Ammonite or Moabite is allowed in God's assembly, not even their descendants up to the tenth generation, forever.

4

Because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and because they hired against thee Balaam the son of Beor of Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse thee.

They didn't welcome you with food and drink when you left Egypt, and they even hired Balaam from Pethor in Mesopotamia to curse you.

5

Nevertheless the LORD thy God would not hearken unto Balaam; but the LORD thy God turned the curse into a blessing unto thee, because the LORD thy God loved thee.

Despite Balaam's pleas, God didn't listen. Yet, He transformed the curse into a blessing for you, simply because He loves you deeply.

6

Thou shalt not seek their peace nor their prosperity all thy days for ever.

Never pursue their peace or success, not now, not ever.

7

Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite; for he is thy brother: thou shalt not abhor an Egyptian; because thou wast a stranger in his land.

Don't hate an Edomite, they're your family. Don't despise an Egyptian, remember you were once a stranger in their land.

8

The children that are begotten of them shall enter into the congregation of the LORD in their third generation.

The children born to them will be welcomed into God's community by their third generation.

9

When the host goeth forth against thine enemies, then keep thee from every wicked thing.

When you face your adversaries, steer clear from all evil deeds.

10

If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp:

If anyone among you becomes unclean due to an unexpected incident at night, they must leave the community. They are not allowed to return until they are clean again.

11

But it shall be, when evening cometh on, he shall wash himself with water: and when the sun is down, he shall come into the camp again.

As night falls, he will cleanse himself in water, and once the sun has set, he will return to the camp.

12

Thou shalt have a place also without the camp, whither thou shalt go forth abroad:

You should have a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself.

13

And thou shalt have a paddle upon thy weapon; and it shall be, when thou wilt ease thyself abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee:

Always carry a tool with your weapon. When you need to relieve yourself outside, use it to dig a hole. Afterwards, cover up what you've left behind.

14

For the LORD thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give up thine enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy: that he see no unclean thing in thee, and turn away from thee.

God walks through your camp, protecting you and handing your enemies over to you. So keep your camp holy, so that He sees nothing unclean among you and turns away from you.

15

Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee:

If a servant runs away from his master and comes to you for refuge, do not hand him back to his master.

16

He shall dwell with thee, even among you, in that place which he shall choose in one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shalt not oppress him.

Let him live among you, in a place he chooses, where he feels happiest. Don't burden him with oppression.

17

There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel.

None of Israel's daughters or sons is to serve as a shrine prostitute.

18

Thou shalt not bring the hire of a whore, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for any vow: for even both these are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

Do not bring to God's house the earnings of a prostitute, whether a woman or a man, to pay any vow. God finds both of these detestable.

19

Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of any thing that is lent upon usury:

Do not charge your brother any interest on a loan, whether it's money, food, or anything else.

20

Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

You can charge interest when you lend to a stranger, but not when you lend to your brother. This way, God will bless everything you do in the land you're going to own.

21

When thou shalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it: for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee.

When you make a promise to God, don't delay in fulfilling it. God will certainly expect it from you, and not doing so would be a sin.

22

But if thou shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee.

If you choose not to make a promise, you're not doing anything wrong.

23

That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform; even a freewill offering, according as thou hast vowed unto the LORD thy God, which thou hast promised with thy mouth.

Keep your word and fulfill your promises, especially those made freely to God. What you've spoken, you must do.

24

When thou comest into thy neighbour’s vineyard, then thou mayest eat grapes thy fill at thine own pleasure; but thou shalt not put any in thy vessel.

When you visit your friend's vineyard, feel free to enjoy the grapes as much as you want, but don't take any away with you.

25

When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour’s standing corn.

When you walk through your neighbor's grainfield, feel free to pick some heads of grain by hand. But never use a sickle, it's not your crop to harvest.
