Deuteronomy 7, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

When your God guides you to the land you're destined to own, He will clear your path by removing powerful nations standing in your way, like the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. Seven nations, each stronger than you, yet they will fall.

2

And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:

When God hands these nations over to you and you defeat them, you must destroy them completely. Don't make any agreements with them or show them any mercy.

3

Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

Don't intermarry with them. Don't let your daughter marry their son, and don't let your son marry their daughter.

4

For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

If they lead your son astray to worship false gods, God's wrath will ignite against you, bringing sudden destruction.

5

But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

You must confront them with determination; tear down their altars, shatter their idols, chop down their sacred trees, and set their carved images ablaze.

6

For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

You are a cherished people, chosen by God. He sees you as unique and special, more than anyone else in the world.

7

The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:

God's love for you isn't based on your numbers or strength, He chose you even though you were the smallest group.

8

But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Because God deeply loves you and promised your ancestors, He powerfully freed you from slavery under Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.

9

Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

Understand this, the LORD your God is the one true God, a loyal God who keeps His promises and showers love and mercy on those who love Him and follow His teachings, generation after generation.

10

And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.

But God repays those who hate Him to their faces, by destroying them. He won't be slow to deal with anyone who hates Him; He will repay them to their face.

11

Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day, to do them.

So, remember to follow the rules, laws, and decisions I'm giving you today, and put them into action with all your heart.

12

Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers:

If you listen and follow these rules, God will honor His promise of love and mercy, just as He promised your ancestors.

13

And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

He will cherish you, showering you with blessings and abundance. He will bless your children and your land, your crops, your wine, and your oil. He will increase your livestock and your sheep, in the land promised to your ancestors.

14

Thou shalt be blessed above all people: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.

You will be uniquely blessed, more than anyone else. Neither you, nor your livestock, will experience the pain of infertility.

15

And the LORD will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.

God promises to heal all your illnesses, sparing you from the terrible diseases you've seen in Egypt. Instead, those who despise you will face these afflictions.

16

And thou shalt consume all the people which the LORD thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.

You must destroy all the peoples God hands over to you; don't look on them with pity. And don't serve their gods, as that will be a trap for you.

17

If thou shalt say in thine heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?

If you ever think to yourself, "These nations are bigger than we are; how can we drive them out?"

18

Thou shalt not be afraid of them: but shalt well remember what the LORD thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;

Don't fear them. Instead, recall how God, your Lord, acted towards Pharaoh and all of Egypt.

19

The great temptations which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the stretched out arm, whereby the LORD thy God brought thee out: so shall the LORD thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid.

You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the miraculous signs and wonders, and the power of God's mighty hand and outstretched arm when He brought you out. God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.

20

Moreover the LORD thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed.

God, in His might, will unleash chaos upon those who oppose you, until those who remain, cowering in fear, are no more.

21

Thou shalt not be affrighted at them: for the LORD thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.

Don't be scared of them, for your God, powerful and awe-inspiring, is with you.

22

And the LORD thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.

Your God will drive out these nations ahead of you little by little. You won't be able to wipe them out all at once, or the wild animals would multiply around you.

23

But the LORD thy God shall deliver them unto thee, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they be destroyed.

But trust this, your God will hand your enemies over to you, and with a powerful force, He will obliterate them until they're completely gone.

24

And he shall deliver their kings into thine hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under heaven: there shall no man be able to stand before thee, until thou have destroyed them.

He will hand over their rulers to you, and you'll erase their existence from the world. No one will be able to resist you until you've completely defeated them.

25

The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therin: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God.

Destroy the idols of false gods with passion; don't lust after or take their gold or silver, as it could trap you. It's deeply offensive to your God.

26

Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

Never bring anything detestable like this into your home, or you will be cursed, set apart for destruction just like it. Instead, utterly detest it and reject it completely, for it is cursed.
