Deuteronomy 2, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.

We listened to God's voice, turned around, and bravely ventured into the vast wilderness, heading towards the Red Sea. We circled Mount Seir for what felt like an eternity.

2

And the LORD spake unto me, saying,

The Lord shared His words with me, expressing,

3

Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.

You've circled this mountain for too long, it's time to head north.

4

And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:

Instruct everyone, "We're journeying through our relatives, the descendants of Esau's territory in Seir. They might fear us, so be careful and respectful."

5

Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.

Don't interfere with them; I won't give you even a tiny piece of their land. I've already promised Mount Seir to Esau as his own.

6

Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

Pay them for their food so you can eat, and for their water so you can quench your thirst.

7

For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

God has been your constant companion, blessing every effort you make. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. For forty years, He's been by your side, ensuring you lack nothing.

8

And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Eziongaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

As we journeyed away from our kin, the descendants of Esau living in Seir, taking the route through the flatlands from Elath and Eziongaber, we felt a pull to change our course. So, we veered off, venturing into the wild expanse of Moab's wilderness.

9

And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.

The Lord told me, "Don't harass the Moabites or provoke them to war. I won't let you take their land because I've already given Ar to Lot's descendants as their own."

10

The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;

Once upon a time, the Emims, a mighty, numerous, and towering tribe, lived there, much like the Anakims.

11

Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites called them Emims.

These beings, known as giants like the Anakims, were seen as fearsome by the Moabites, who referred to them as Emims.

12

The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto them.

Before, the Horims lived in Seir. But Esau's descendants took over, wiping them out and settling in their place. Just like how Israel claimed the land God gifted them.

13

Now rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.

I urged, "Stand up, let's cross the Zered stream." And so, we bravely crossed the flowing Zered.

14

And the space in which we came from Kadeshbarnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.

We journeyed from Kadeshbarnea to the brook Zered for 38 long years. During this time, all the warriors among us perished, just as the Lord had foretold.

15

For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.

Truly, God's wrath was upon them, erasing them from their community until they were completely gone.

16

So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,

And so it happened, when all the fighting men had died off and were no longer among the people,

17

That the LORD spake unto me, saying,

The Lord communicated with me, expressing,

18

Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:

Today, you must journey through Ar, the border of Moab, with courage and determination.

19

And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.

When you approach the Ammonites, don't trouble or interfere with them. I won't give you any part of their land, because I've already promised it to Lot's descendants.

20

(That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;

This place was once known as the land of giants, where ancient giants lived. The Ammonites referred to them as Zamzummims.

21

A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:

A mighty, numerous, and towering people, akin to the Anakims, once existed. Yet, the Lord eradicated them, paving the way for others to thrive and inhabit their lands.

22

As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:

Just as he did for Esau's descendants living in Seir, when he wiped out the Horims before them. They took over their land and have lived there ever since.

23

And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

The Avims, who lived from Hazerim to Azzah, were wiped out by the Caphtorims, who originated from Caphtor. The Caphtorims then took over their lands and homes.

24

Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

Get up, embark on your journey, cross the Arnon river. See, I've handed over Sihon, the Amorite king of Heshbon, and his land to you. Start claiming it and bravely face him in battle.

25

This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.

Today, I will start to instill a deep respect and fear for you in all nations across the world. When they hear about you, they will shudder and feel distressed.

26

And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

From the heart of the barren wilderness of Kedemoth, I dispatched envoys to Sihon, the king of Heshbon. They carried a simple, heartfelt message of peace.

27

Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.

Allow me to journey through your territory. I'll stick to the main road, not straying right or left.

28

Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;

Please, sell me food for cash, so I can satisfy my hunger; and provide me water for payment, so I can quench my thirst. I promise, I'll just pass by on foot.

29

(As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us.

Just as the descendants of Esau in Seir and the Moabites in Ar did for me, let me pass through until I cross the Jordan into the land our Lord God is giving us.

30

But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.

But King Sihon of Heshbon refused to let us through. God made his spirit stubborn and his heart unyielding, so that he could be defeated by us, just as we see today.

31

And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.

And God spoke to me, saying, "See, I've started to hand over Sihon and his territory to you. Start claiming it, so it can become your inheritance."

32

Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.

Sihon, with his entire army, bravely confronted us, ready for battle at Jahaz.

33

And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

Our Lord, our God, handed him over to us. We defeated him, his sons, and everyone with him, with a surge of triumph and relief.

34

And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:

In that moment, we seized all his cities, completely eradicating every man, woman, and child. We left no survivors; every city was left desolate.

35

Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.

We only claimed the livestock for ourselves, and the treasures from the cities we conquered.

36

From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us:

From Aroer, by the river's edge, to the city near the river, all the way to Gilead, no city was too fortified for us. Our God, in His infinite power and love, handed them all to us.

37

Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us.

We never ventured into the land of Ammon's children, nor did we approach the river Jabbok or the mountain cities. We respected and obeyed God's command to avoid these places.
