Exodus 24, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And he said unto Moses, Come up unto the LORD, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship ye afar off.

He told Moses, "You, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy respected elders, come up to the Lord. But worship Him from a distance."

2

And Moses alone shall come near the LORD: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.

Only Moses may approach God; others must keep their distance, and the people cannot accompany him.

3

And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do.

Moses, filled with divine wisdom, shared God's words and laws with the people. United, they responded in a single, resolute voice, "We will follow all that the Lord has commanded."

4

And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

Moses, filled with divine inspiration, diligently penned down every word from the Lord. At the break of dawn, he built a sacred altar at the foot of the hill, erecting twelve pillars in honor of Israel's twelve tribes.

5

And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the LORD.

He dispatched young Israelites to present burnt offerings and peace offerings of oxen to the LORD, their hearts filled with reverence and devotion.

6

And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.

Moses, with deep reverence, collected half of the sacrificial blood into bowls, while the rest he gently sprinkled on the sacred altar.

7

And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient.

He held up the sacred covenant, reading it aloud for all to hear. The people responded with conviction, promising to follow and obey all that the Lord has commanded.

8

And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.

With deep reverence, Moses sprinkled the blood upon the people. His voice echoed, "This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you, based on all these words."

9

Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel:

Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy respected elders of Israel courageously ascended, their hearts filled with reverence and anticipation.

10

And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.

They beheld the God of Israel, beneath Him a shimmering sapphire pathway, reflecting the pure, clear beauty of the heavens.

11

And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink.

God did not harm the leaders of Israel's children. They were blessed to see Him, and they celebrated with food and drink.

12

And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.

The Lord warmly invited Moses, "Join me on the mountain. I have stone tablets for you, inscribed with laws and commandments. I want you to share these teachings."

13

And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God.

Moses, filled with determination, stood tall alongside his aide, Joshua. With a heart full of faith, Moses journeyed up the divine mountain of God.

14

And he said unto the elders, Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you: and, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you: if any man have any matters to do, let him come unto them.

He told the elders, "Wait here for us until we return. Remember, Aaron and Hur are with you. If anyone has issues to resolve, they should go to them."

15

And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount.

Moses ascended the mountain, shrouded in a mysterious cloud.

16

And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud.

The majestic presence of God rested on Mount Sinai, shrouded by a cloud for six days. On the seventh day, from within the cloud, He summoned Moses.

17

And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.

The children of Israel saw God's glory as a powerful, consuming fire atop the mountain.

18

And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.

Moses bravely ventured into the heart of the cloud, ascending the mountain. There, he remained, immersed for a full forty days and nights.
