Exodus 34, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.
The Lord told Moses, "Carve two stone tablets just like the first ones. I will inscribe them with the same words that were on the original tablets you broke."
And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount.
Get prepared at dawn, ascend Mount Sinai in the morning light, and meet me at the peak.
And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.
No one should accompany you, nor should anyone be visible on the entire mountain. Also, don't let any livestock graze near that mountain.
And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.
With dedication, he carved two stone tablets identical to the first. As dawn broke, Moses, obeying God's command, ascended Mount Sinai. He held firmly in his hands the two stone tablets.
And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.
In a misty embrace, the LORD came down, standing beside him, and proclaimed His divine name.
And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
As the Lord moved before him, He declared, "I am the Lord, your God, full of mercy and kindness, patient, overflowing with love and truth."
Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
Showing endless compassion, forgiving all wrongs and sins, yet by no means letting the guilty go unpunished. He brings the sins of the parents upon their children and their grandchildren, to the third and fourth generation.
And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.
In a rush of reverence, Moses quickly lowered his head to the ground, his heart swelling with worship.
And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O LORD, let my LORD, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.
He pleaded, "If I have earned your favor, O LORD, please walk with us. We are a stubborn people; forgive our mistakes and sins, and accept us as your own."
And he said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee.
He promised, "I'm making a sacred pact. I will perform miracles for your people, unlike anything seen before on earth or in any nation. Everyone will witness the awe-inspiring power of the Lord. Prepare, for what I will do with you is truly profound."
Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
Pay attention to my instructions today: I'm clearing your path, removing all obstacles and enemies like the Amorite, Canaanite, Hittite, Perizzite, Hivite, and Jebusite.
Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee:
Be careful not to make a treaty with the people living in the land you are entering; it might become a trap among you.
But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:
You must demolish their places of worship, shatter their idols, and eliminate their sacred groves.
For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:
You should only adore one God, the LORD. He's known as Jealous because He desires your complete devotion.
Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice;
Be careful not to form alliances with the locals, as they may lead you astray to worship their gods and participate in their rituals.
And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.
If you allow your sons to marry their daughters, they may be led astray, tempted to follow their gods, and in turn, your sons may also be tempted to abandon their faith.
Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.
Never create or worship false idols forged by your own hands.
The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib: for in the month Abib thou camest out from Egypt.
Celebrate the festival of unleavened bread. For seven days, eat bread without yeast, as I've instructed you, during the month of Abib. This is to remember your liberation from Egypt during this month.
All that openeth the matrix is mine; and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male.
Every firstborn, whether human or animal, belongs to me; including the first male calf or lamb from your herds.
But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem. And none shall appear before me empty.
You must trade a lamb for the firstborn donkey, or else its life must end. Your firstborn sons, too, must be symbolically bought back. And remember, never come before me without a gift in hand.
Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.
Work hard for six days, but take a break on the seventh day. Even during the busiest seasons, remember to rest.
And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year’s end.
Celebrate the festival of weeks, rejoicing in the first wheat harvest, and the gathering festival at the close of the year.
Thrice in the year shall all your menchildren appear before the LORD God, the God of Israel.
Three times a year, all your sons should present themselves before the Lord God, the God of Israel, with reverence and devotion.
For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the LORD thy God thrice in the year.
I will clear your path, pushing away all obstacles, and expand your territory. No one will covet your land when you journey to meet your God three times a year.
Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning.
Do not mix my sacrifice's blood with yeast; also, don't let the Passover feast's offering remain until morning. Feel the urgency and respect in these commands.
The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother’s milk.
Bring the very first produce from your land to God's house as an offering. Never cook a young goat in its mother's milk.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.
The LORD passionately told Moses, "Pen down these words. They're the essence of the sacred promise I've made with you and Israel."
And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
For forty days and nights, he stayed with the Lord, not eating or drinking. In this time, he etched the sacred agreement, the ten commandments, onto stone tablets.
And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.
When Moses descended from Mount Sinai, carrying the two sacred tablets, he was unaware that his face was radiating a divine glow from his conversation with God.
And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.
When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiating with a divine glow. This sight filled them with awe and fear, making them hesitant to approach him.
And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them.
Moses summoned them; Aaron and all the leaders came back to him. Then, Moses had a heartfelt conversation with them.
And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai.
Afterwards, all the children of Israel gathered close. He shared with them every word that the Lord had spoken to him on Mount Sinai.
And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face.
Once Moses finished sharing God's words, he gently covered his face with a veil.
But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded.
When Moses stepped into God's presence to converse, he removed his veil. He emerged later, sharing with the Israelites the divine instructions he had received.
And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
The children of Israel witnessed a radiant glow on Moses' face. Overwhelmed, Moses covered his face until he went to converse with God.
