Exodus 33, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:
The Lord passionately told Moses, "Leave this place, you and the people you've led from Egypt. Go to the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I vowed to give this land to their descendants, and that promise stands."
And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
I'll send a guardian angel ahead of you, who will clear your path by removing all obstacles and adversaries, including the Canaanite, Amorite, Hittite, Perizzite, Hivite, and Jebusite.
Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.
To a place abundant with blessings, I won't journey with you because of your stubbornness, fearing I might destroy you on the path.
And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.
When the people heard this terrible news, they were filled with sorrow. No one adorned themselves with their usual decorations.
For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.
God told Moses, "Tell the people of Israel, you're stubborn. I could wipe you out instantly. So, remove your jewelry and show humility, so I can decide what to do with you."
And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.
The children of Israel, filled with humility and reverence, removed their adornments at Mount Horeb.
And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
Moses set up the sacred tent far from the camp, naming it the Meeting Tent. Everyone who wanted to seek God's presence would leave the camp to visit this special place.
And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.
When Moses headed towards the tabernacle, everyone stood up, watching him from their tent entrances with anticipation, until he disappeared inside.
And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses.
As Moses stepped into the sacred tent, a cloud-like pillar gently descended, positioning itself at the entrance. In this mystical moment, God began a heartfelt conversation with Moses.
And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
Everyone watched as the cloud pillar stood majestically at the entrance of the sacred tent. Overwhelmed with awe, they all stood up, each person at their own tent's entrance, and worshipped in reverence.
And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.
God spoke to Moses as intimately as one would to a close friend. Moses then returned to his people, while his loyal aide, young Joshua, stayed behind in the sacred tent.
And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.
Moses pleaded with the Lord, "You've asked me to lead these people, but you haven't told me who will accompany me. You say you know me and that I have found favor with you, but I still feel uncertain."
Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
Please, if I have earned your favor, guide me on your path. Let me truly know you and find favor in your eyes. Remember, this nation belongs to you.
And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
He promised, "I will always be with you, providing you peace and comfort."
And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.
He pleaded, "If you're not with me, don't take us from here."
For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
How can we be sure that we, your people, have found favor in your eyes? Isn't it through your presence with us? This sets us apart from everyone else in the world.
And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
The Lord assured Moses, "I will fulfill your request because you are special to me, Moses. I see your goodness and I know you personally."
And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
He pleaded, "Please, let me witness your magnificent splendor."
And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
He promised, "I'll let you see the depth of my kindness, and I'll proudly speak of the LORD. I'll show grace and mercy as I see fit."
And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
He gently stated, "You cannot gaze upon me, for no human can witness my true form and continue to exist."
And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
And the Lord gently whispered, "See, there's a spot right next to me. You shall stand firm on this rock."
And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
As my divine presence moves past, I'll tuck you safely into a rock's crevice, shielding you with my hand as I pass by.
And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
When I remove my hand, you'll glimpse my retreating figure, but my face will remain a mystery to you.
