Revelation 17, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:

One of the seven angels, each holding a bowl, approached me. With a voice full of authority, he beckoned, "Come, let me show you the judgment of the great prostitute who sits on many waters."

2

With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

The rulers of the world have indulged in immoral pleasures with her, and the people of the earth have been intoxicated by her sinful allure.

3

So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

In a spiritual trance, I was led into the desolate wilderness. There, I saw a woman seated on a vivid red beast, covered in blasphemous names. The creature had seven heads and ten horns.

4

And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:

The woman was draped in royal purple and fiery scarlet, adorned with gold, gems, and pearls. She held a golden cup, brimming with the vile and dirty deeds of her immoral actions.

5

And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

Emblazoned on her brow was a cryptic title, "Babylon the Mighty, the Mother of Immorality and Earth's Horrors."

6

And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

I saw the woman, intoxicated with the innocent blood of the faithful and the selfless followers of Jesus. Seeing her, I was filled with intense shock and awe.

7

And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

The angel asked me, "Why are you so amazed? I will explain the enigma of the woman and the creature carrying her, the one with seven heads and ten horns."

8

The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

The monster you saw once existed, but doesn't now. It will rise from the abyss, only to be destroyed. Those living on earth, whose names aren't recorded in the book of life since the world's beginning, will be shocked when they see this monster that was, is no longer, but will return.

9

And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

In the heart of the wise, understanding resides. The seven heads symbolize seven mountains, upon which the woman rests.

10

And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.

Seven rulers exist: five have already fallen, one still stands, and the last one hasn't arrived yet. But when he does, his reign will be brief.

11

And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

The creature that once existed, but now doesn't, is actually the eighth, yet belongs to the seven, and is destined for destruction.

12

And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.

The ten horns you saw represent ten leaders who haven't yet gained their kingdoms. However, they will briefly rule with the beast, sharing its power.

13

These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

United in thought, they will surrender their might and vigor to the monster.

14

These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

Those who challenge the Lamb will be defeated, for he is the ultimate ruler, the King above all kings, the Lord above all lords. Those who stand by him are not just random followers, but they are handpicked, loyal, and true believers.

15

And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

He told me, the waters you saw, where the immoral woman sits, represent diverse people, crowds, nations, and languages.

16

And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

The ten horns you saw on the beast will despise the prostitute. They will strip her bare, consume her, and set her ablaze.

17

For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

For God has put it into their hearts to carry out His will: to unite and hand their kingdom over to the beast, until God's words are fully realized.

18

And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

The woman you saw symbolizes the powerful city that rules over all the world's leaders.
