Leviticus 1, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,

With a deep, resonating voice, the LORD summoned Moses. His words echoed from within the sacred meeting tent, saying,

2

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.

Tell the people of Israel, if anyone wants to give a gift to God, let it be from your livestock - either from your herd or your flock.

3

If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD.

If he chooses to offer a flawless male from his herd as a burnt sacrifice, let him willingly present it at the entrance of the sacred gathering place, before the Lord.

4

And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

He will gently lay his hand on the sacrifice, and it will be accepted, bringing him peace and forgiveness.

5

And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

He must end the bull's life in the presence of the Lord. Aaron's sons, the priests, will then collect its blood. They'll sprinkle this blood all around the altar, located near the entrance of the meeting tent.

6

And he shall flay the burnt offering, and cut it into his pieces.

He will tenderly prepare the sacrifice, skillfully dividing it into portions.

7

And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon the altar, and lay the wood in order upon the fire:

Aaron's sons, the priests, will ignite the altar with passion, carefully arranging the wood on the flames.

8

And the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall lay the parts, the head, and the fat, in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar:

The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall carefully arrange the pieces, the head, and the fat on the wood that's burning on the altar.

9

But his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water: and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

He must wash the animal's inner parts and legs with water. Then the priest will offer everything on the altar, burning it all as a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, pleasing and sweet to the Lord.

10

And if his offering be of the flocks, namely, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice; he shall bring it a male without blemish.

If one chooses to offer a gift from his flock, be it sheep or goat, for a sacred sacrifice, it must be a flawless male.

11

And he shall kill it on the side of the altar northward before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall sprinkle his blood round about upon the altar.

He will end its life near the northern side of the sacred altar, in the presence of God. Aaron's sons, the priests, will then scatter its blood around the altar, honoring the ritual.

12

And he shall cut it into his pieces, with his head and his fat: and the priest shall lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar:

He will carefully divide it, including the head and the fat. The priest will then arrange them on the burning wood atop the altar.

13

But he shall wash the inwards and the legs with water: and the priest shall bring it all, and burn it upon the altar: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

He must cleanse the inner parts and legs with water. Then, the priest will present and burn it all on the altar. This is a burnt offering, a fiery sacrifice, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

14

And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the LORD be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves, or of young pigeons.

If one wishes to offer a burnt sacrifice to the Lord using birds, they should choose either turtledoves or young pigeons for their heartfelt offering.

15

And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and wring off his head, and burn it on the altar; and the blood thereof shall be wrung out at the side of the altar:

The priest will take it to the altar. He will wring off its head and burn it on the altar. Its blood will be drained out at the side of the altar.

16

And he shall pluck away his crop with his feathers, and cast it beside the altar on the east part, by the place of the ashes:

He will pull out the bird's crop along with its feathers, and throw it near the altar, towards the east, by the ash heap.

17

And he shall cleave it with the wings thereof, but shall not divide it asunder: and the priest shall burn it upon the altar, upon the wood that is upon the fire: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

He will split it, keeping its wings intact, not tearing it apart. The priest will then place it on the altar, atop the burning wood. This is a burnt offering, a fiery gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
