Leviticus 10, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.

Nadab and Abihu, Aaron's sons, each took their censers. They filled them with fire and incense, then offered unauthorized fire to the Lord, fire He had not commanded them to offer.

2

And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

The Lord's fiery wrath erupted, consuming them completely, and they perished in His presence.

3

Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace.

Moses turned to Aaron, his voice filled with awe, "God has spoken. He will be honored by those who approach Him, and in front of everyone, He will be exalted." Aaron, overwhelmed, remained silent.

4

And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.

Moses urgently beckoned Mishael and Elzaphan, Aaron's cousins, and said, "Come, carry your dead relatives away from the sacred place, out of the camp."

5

So they went near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp; as Moses had said.

So, they approached cautiously, their hearts pounding, and gently lifted them in their cloaks, just as Moses had instructed, and carried them away from the camp.

6

And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled.

Moses, with a heavy heart, warned Aaron and his sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, "Don't bare your heads or tear your clothes in grief, or you'll die, and God's anger will strike everyone. Let your fellow Israelites mourn the fiery disaster God has ignited."

7

And ye shall not go out from the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you. And they did according to the word of Moses.

Stay within the sacred tent's entrance, for your life depends on it. You carry God's blessed oil upon you. They followed Moses' instructions faithfully.

8

And the LORD spake unto Aaron, saying,

The Lord gently addressed Aaron, expressing,

9

Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:

Do not drink wine or strong drink, you and your sons, when entering the place of worship, or you will die. This rule is eternal for all your generations.

10

And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;

So you can distinguish what's sacred from what's not, and what's pure from what's impure.

11

And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.

So you can guide the children of Israel, sharing all the divine laws that the LORD communicated through Moses.

12

And Moses spake unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left, Take the meat offering that remaineth of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar: for it is most holy:

Moses, with a heavy heart, turned to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar. He instructed them, "Take the grain offering that is left over from the Lord's offerings made by fire and eat it by the altar, without yeast. It is most holy."

13

And ye shall eat it in the holy place, because it is thy due, and thy sons’ due, of the sacrifices of the LORD made by fire: for so I am commanded.

Eat it in this sacred space, for it is your share and your sons' share of the offerings made to the Lord through fire, as I have been instructed.

14

And the wave breast and heave shoulder shall ye eat in a clean place; thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee: for they be thy due, and thy sons’ due, which are given out of the sacrifices of peace offerings of the children of Israel.

Enjoy the blessings of the sacred meal in a pure place, you and your family. These are your rightful shares, given from the peaceful offerings of the community.

15

The heave shoulder and the wave breast shall they bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave offering before the LORD; and it shall be thine, and thy sons’ with thee, by a statute for ever; as the LORD hath commanded.

Bring the shoulder and breast with the fat burnt in holy fire, and wave them before the Lord with reverence. These portions will be yours and your sons' forever, as the Lord has instructed.

16

And Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron which were left alive, saying,

Moses, with great determination, searched for the sacrificial goat, only to find it burnt. He was filled with anger towards Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's surviving sons, and he said,

17

Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin offering in the holy place, seeing it is most holy, and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD?

Why didn't you consume the sin offering in the sacred space? It's incredibly sacred and God gifted it to you to carry the community's wrongdoings, to seek forgiveness on their behalf from the Lord.

18

Behold, the blood of it was not brought in within the holy place: ye should indeed have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded.

Look, its blood wasn't taken into the sacred space. You should have consumed it there, just as I instructed.

19

And Aaron said unto Moses, Behold, this day have they offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD; and such things have befallen me: and if I had eaten the sin offering to day, should it have been accepted in the sight of the LORD?

Aaron turned to Moses, his voice heavy with emotion, "Today, they've given their sin and burnt offerings to God. But look at what's happened to me. If I had partaken in the sin offering today, would God have accepted it?"

20

And when Moses heard that, he was content.

Upon hearing the news, a wave of peace washed over Moses, filling his heart with satisfaction.
