Leviticus 19, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
The Lord passionately communicated with Moses, expressing,
Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.
Tell everyone in Israel, you must strive to be pure, because I, your God, am pure.
Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.
Respect your mother and father deeply, honor my holy days. Remember, I am the Lord, your God.
Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the LORD your God.
Don't be drawn to false idols or create false gods for yourself. Remember, I am your one and true God.
And if ye offer a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD, ye shall offer it at your own will.
If you choose to present a peace offering to the Lord, do it freely and willingly from your heart.
It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the morrow: and if ought remain until the third day, it shall be burnt in the fire.
Enjoy the meal on the day you prepare it and also the next day. But if any is left over until the third day, it must be destroyed by fire.
And if it be eaten at all on the third day, it is abominable; it shall not be accepted.
If you dare to eat it on the third day, it's disgusting and won't be accepted.
Therefore every one that eateth it shall bear his iniquity, because he hath profaned the hallowed thing of the LORD: and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
Anyone who disrespects what is sacred to the Lord by consuming it will carry the weight of their guilt. They will be separated from their community.
And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest.
When you harvest your land, don't take everything. Leave some behind for others in need.
And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God.
Don't pick your vineyard clean or take every grape. Leave some for those less fortunate and newcomers. Remember, I am your God who asks this of you.
Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.
Don't take what isn't yours, be honest in your dealings, and always speak the truth to each other.
And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.
Don't misuse my name to deceive others, nor disrespect your God by doing so. Remember, I am the LORD.
Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.
Don't cheat or steal from your neighbor. Pay your workers promptly - don't make them wait until morning.
Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before the blind, but shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD.
Never speak ill of those who can't hear, or hinder the path of those who can't see. Respect and honor your God, for I am the Lord.
Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.
Treat everyone fairly when making judgments. Don't favor the poor or give special treatment to the powerful. Always make decisions based on what's right and just.
Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour; I am the LORD.
Don't spread rumors or gossip about others in your community, and never harm your neighbor. Remember, I am the Lord.
Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.
Don't hold anger towards your sibling in your heart. Correct your neighbor when they're wrong, don't let them continue in their mistakes.
Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.
Don't seek revenge or hold a grudge against anyone in your community, but instead, love others as much as you love yourself. Remember, I am the Lord.
Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.
Respect my rules. Don't breed your livestock with different species. Don't plant mixed seeds in your field. Don't wear clothes made from mixed fabrics like linen and wool.
And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free.
If anyone sleeps with a woman who is engaged to be married but is still a slave, not yet freed or redeemed, she will be punished but they won't be killed, because she wasn't free.
And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, even a ram for a trespass offering.
He must present his apology gift to God, at the entrance of the sacred tent, a ram to symbolize his regret.
And the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering before the LORD for his sin which he hath done: and the sin which he hath done shall be forgiven him.
The priest will seek forgiveness from God on his behalf, using the ram offered for his wrongdoings. God will forgive the sins he has committed.
And when ye shall come into the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food, then ye shall count the fruit thereof as uncircumcised: three years shall it be as uncircumcised unto you: it shall not be eaten of.
When you finally settle in your new land and plant various fruit trees, consider their fruit as off-limits for the first three years. They are not ready to be eaten yet.
But in the fourth year all the fruit thereof shall be holy to praise the LORD withal.
In the fourth year, all the fruit harvested will be a sacred offering, expressing our gratitude and adoration to the Lord.
And in the fifth year shall ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof: I am the LORD your God.
In the fifth year, savor the fruit it bears, let its abundance bless you. Remember, I am your God.
Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times.
Don't consume food with the blood still in it, avoid practicing magic, and don't try to read omens or tell fortunes.
Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.
Don't cut off the hair at the sides of your head or clip the edges of your beard.
Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.
Do not harm your body by cutting it or marking it in mourning for the dead, for I am your God who loves and cherishes you.
Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.
Never exploit your daughter by forcing her into prostitution; it will only lead to corruption and evil spreading throughout the land.
Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.
Honor my rest days, respect my sacred space; I am your God.
Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.
Don't pay attention to those who claim to communicate with spirits or seek guidance from sorcerers. They will only lead you astray. Remember, I am your God, the Lord.
Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.
Show respect by rising to your feet in the presence of the elderly, honor their wisdom, and always be mindful of your reverence for God. Remember, I am the Lord.
And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him.
If a newcomer stays in your homeland, treat them with kindness, not hostility.
But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.
Treat the foreigner living among you as your own, love them as you love yourself; remember, you too were once foreigners in Egypt. I am your God.
Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure.
Always be fair and honest, whether you're making decisions, measuring, weighing, or sizing up a situation.
Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt.
Fair scales, honest measurements, that's what you should use. Remember, I am your God, the one who freed you from Egypt.
Therefore shall ye observe all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: I am the LORD.
Respect and follow all my rules and decisions, for I am your God.
