Leviticus 21, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron, and say unto them, There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people:

The LORD instructed Moses, "Tell Aaron's sons, the priests, that no one should become impure by contact with the dead among their community."

2

But for his kin, that is near unto him, that is, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother.

The only exception is his close family - his mother, father, son, daughter, and brother; for them he may become impure.

3

And for his sister a virgin, that is nigh unto him, which hath had no husband; for her may he be defiled.

For his unmarried sister, close to his heart, who has never known a man, he may sacrifice his purity.

4

But he shall not defile himself, being a chief man among his people, to profane himself.

As a respected leader, he must not tarnish his purity or dishonor himself.

5

They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.

They should not shave their heads bald, trim the edges of their beards, or mark their skin with cuts.

6

They shall be holy unto their God, and not profane the name of their God: for the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and the bread of their God, they do offer: therefore they shall be holy.

They must honor their God, never disrespecting His name. For their sacrifices and offerings, they must remain pure and devoted.

7

They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he is holy unto his God.

They must not marry a woman who has been a prostitute or is otherwise defiled, nor a woman divorced by her husband, for they are sacred to their God.

8

Thou shalt sanctify him therefore; for he offereth the bread of thy God: he shall be holy unto thee: for I the LORD, which sanctify you, am holy.

Honor him, for he brings you God's sustenance. He is sacred to you, just as you are to me, the Lord, who makes you holy, for I am holy.

9

And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.

If a priest's daughter dishonors herself by becoming a prostitute, she dishonors her father; she must be burned with fire.

10

And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes;

The high priest, chosen from his brothers and anointed with sacred oil, who is dedicated to wearing the holy garments, must not expose his head or tear his clothes in distress.

11

Neither shall he go in to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother;

He must not touch any lifeless body, not even for his parents, to avoid tainting himself.

12

Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him: I am the LORD.

He must not leave or disrespect God's sacred place, for he carries the blessing of God's anointing. Remember, I am the Lord.

13

And he shall take a wife in her virginity.

He should marry a woman who has never known another man.

14

A widow, or a divorced woman, or profane, or an harlot, these shall he not take: but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife.

The high priest must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, a defiled woman or a prostitute. Instead, he must choose a virgin from his own community as his wife.

15

Neither shall he profane his seed among his people: for I the LORD do sanctify him.

He must not dishonor his family within his community, for I, the LORD, have set him apart with a sacred purpose.

16

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

The Lord passionately communicated with Moses, expressing,

17

Speak unto Aaron, saying, Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.

Tell Aaron, anyone from his lineage with any imperfection, should not come forward to present God's offering.

18

For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or any thing superfluous,

No man with a physical defect may draw near to offer it - no one who is blind or lame, who has a flat nose, or any deformity.

19

Or a man that is brokenfooted, or brokenhanded,

A man with a broken foot or a broken hand, filled with pain and struggle.

20

Or crookbackt, or a dwarf, or that hath a blemish in his eye, or be scurvy, or scabbed, or hath his stones broken;

Or one with a hunched back, or a dwarf, or one with a defect in his eye, or a skin disease, or a scaly condition, or one with damaged reproductive organs.

21

No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire: he hath a blemish; he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God.

If a man from Aaron the priest's lineage has a flaw, he cannot approach to present God's fiery offerings. With a flaw, he is not allowed to offer God's bread.

22

He shall eat the bread of his God, both of the most holy, and of the holy.

He will partake in the divine sustenance from his God, experiencing both the sacred and the profoundly sacred.

23

Only he shall not go in unto the vail, nor come nigh unto the altar, because he hath a blemish; that he profane not my sanctuaries: for I the LORD do sanctify them.

He must not enter the sacred veil or approach the altar due to his imperfections, to avoid defiling my holy places. For I, the Lord, have made them holy.

24

And Moses told it unto Aaron, and to his sons, and unto all the children of Israel.

Moses passionately shared his message with Aaron, his sons, and every single person in Israel.
