Leviticus 26, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.
Don't create or worship any idols or statues, not even from stone. Don't bow to them, for I, your God, am the only one you should worship.
Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.
Honor my rest days and respect my sacred space, for I am the Lord.
If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them;
If you follow my rules, obey my instructions, and act upon them with sincerity and love;
Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.
In the right time, I'll bless you with refreshing rain, making the earth fruitful and the trees heavy with ripe fruit.
And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.
Your harvest will last until planting, and you'll have more than enough bread to eat and live safely on your land.
And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.
I will bless your land with tranquility, allowing you to rest without fear. I will remove all harmful creatures and ensure no violence disrupts your peace.
And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword.
You will pursue those who oppose you, and they will crumble under your might.
And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.
With courage in your hearts, just five of you can send a hundred enemies running. And when a hundred of you stand together, ten thousand foes will flee. Your adversaries will crumble under your might.
For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you.
I will look on you with favor, help you thrive and grow in number, and keep my covenant with you.
And ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new.
You'll consume what's been stored from the past, making room for the fresh blessings to come.
And I set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you.
I've made my home among you; my heart will never despise you.
And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.
I'll journey with you, becoming your guiding light, and you'll be my cherished family.
I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.
I am your God, who rescued you from Egypt's chains. You're no longer slaves; I've shattered your shackles and set you free to walk tall.
But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments;
If you choose not to listen to me or follow my commands,
And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant:
If you ignore my rules or hate my decisions, refusing to follow my commands and breaking our agreement,
I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.
I too will respond in kind; I will send sudden terror, wasting disease, and burning fever upon you, which will destroy your sight and fill your hearts with sadness. Your hard work will be in vain, as your foes will reap the fruits of your labor.
And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.
I will set myself against you, and you will be struck down by your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you, and you'll run even when no one is chasing you.
And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.
If you still choose to ignore me despite everything, then your punishment for your wrongdoings will be seven times harsher.
And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass:
I will shatter your arrogance and strength; I will turn your skies into unyielding iron and your lands into impenetrable brass.
And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits.
Despite all your efforts, you'll find no reward: your land will remain barren, and your trees will bear no fruit.
And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.
If you choose to ignore me and go against my ways, I will bring seven times more plagues upon you, as your wrongdoings deserve.
I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be desolate.
I will unleash untamed creatures upon you, who will take your children and decimate your livestock, reducing your numbers drastically. Your once bustling paths will be left deserted and lonely.
And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me;
If even after all these things you will not accept my correction, but continue to oppose me,
Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins.
If you continue to defy me, I too will oppose you, and your punishment will be sevenfold for your wrongdoings.
And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
I will bring the sword upon you to avenge the breaking of our sacred pact. As you huddle in your cities, I will send disease among you, and you will fall into the hands of your foes.
And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied.
When I shatter your means of sustenance, ten women will share one oven to bake your bread. They will ration it out to you, yet no matter how much you eat, you will still feel unsatisfied.
And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me;
If you still choose to ignore me and go against my ways, despite everything...
Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.
Then in my fury I will set myself against you; it will be me, yes me, who will punish you sevenfold for your wrongdoings.
And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.
In your desperation, you will be driven to consume the very life you've given - your own sons and daughters.
And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you.
I will demolish your sacred sites, shatter your idols, and scatter your remains among the ruins of your false gods. My heart will be filled with disgust for you.
And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours.
I will reduce your cities to ruins, devastate your sacred places, and no longer find pleasure in your fragrant offerings.
And I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it.
I will turn the land into a barren wasteland, leaving your foes living there utterly shocked.
And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.
I will disperse you among the nations and draw the sword to pursue you. Your homeland will be left barren, your cities reduced to ruins.
Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies’ land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths.
When the land is left barren and you are in enemy territory, even then, the land will find peace and celebrate its days of rest.
As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it.
While it remains abandoned, it will finally find peace; a peace it couldn't find during your sabbaths when you lived there.
And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.
For those of you who survive, I will fill your hearts with fear in enemy territories. The mere rustle of a leaf will send you running, as if escaping a sword. You'll stumble and fall, even when no one is chasing you.
And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies.
They will crumble into each other, as if struck by an unseen blade, even when no one is chasing them. You will be helpless against your foes.
And ye shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.
You'll perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies will devour you.
And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them.
Those of you who remain will wither in guilt in enemy territories; you'll also suffer from the wrongdoings of your ancestors.
If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;
If they admit their wrongdoings, and the mistakes of their ancestors, acknowledging how they've acted against me and chosen paths that oppose mine;
And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity:
I too have opposed them, leading them into enemy territory. But if their hardened hearts soften and they accept the consequences of their wrongdoings:
Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.
I will fondly recall my sacred promises to Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham. I will not forget the land that binds us.
The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes.
The land will be abandoned, finally resting as it lays barren without them. They will bear the consequences of their wrongdoings, for they rejected my rules and detested my laws.
And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God.
Even when they're in enemy territory, I won't abandon or despise them, nor will I completely destroy them or break my promise to them, because I am their God.
But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God: I am the LORD.
For their sake, I'll honor the promise I made to their forefathers, whom I led out of Egypt, in full view of others, to be their God. Remember, I am the Lord.
These are the statutes and judgments and laws, which the LORD made between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.
These are the sacred rules and decisions, crafted by God Himself for the people of Israel on Mount Sinai, delivered through Moses.
