Psalm 118, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.

Express your gratitude to the Lord, for His kindness is unending and His mercy is everlasting.

2

Let Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.

Israel, acknowledge now, His compassion is eternal.

3

Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.

May Aaron's family now declare, his kindness lasts forever.

4

Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever.

Those who respect the Lord, speak up! His kindness lasts forever.

5

I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place.

In my pain, I cried out to God. He heard me and gave me room to breathe.

6

The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

God stands with me, so I am fearless. What harm can anyone really do to me?

7

The LORD taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me.

God stands by me and supports those who assist me. So I will look in triumph on those who despise me.

8

It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.

Relying on God's wisdom brings more peace than depending on human judgment.

9

It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.

Relying on God's love is far more comforting than depending on the promises of powerful people.

10

All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD will I destroy them.

Surrounded by nations, I felt overwhelmed. Yet, in God's name, I will destroy them.

11

They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

Surrounded, yes, completely encircled by them, I felt trapped. But in God's name, I will destroy them.

12

They compassed me about like bees: they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

Surrounded by them, I felt like the target of a swarm of bees. But just like a fire in thorns dies out, they were snuffed out. For in the Lord's name, I will destroy them.

13

Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall: but the LORD helped me.

You pushed me hard, trying to make me fall, but God was there to support me.

14

The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.

The Lord is the source of my power and joy, and He has become my savior.

15

The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.

Joyful shouts and salvation echo in the homes of the good, for God's mighty hand works wonders.

16

The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.

God's power is supreme and His actions are courageous.

17

I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.

I will not succumb to death, instead, I will thrive, passionately sharing the miracles of God.

18

The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.

God has disciplined me harshly, yet He has not abandoned me to perish.

19

Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD:

Unveil before me the doors of virtue, I'll step through them, expressing my heartfelt gratitude to the LORD.

20

This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter.

This divine doorway, where only the pure-hearted are welcomed.

21

I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.

I'll express my gratitude, for you've listened to me and have become my savior.

22

The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

The rock that was once rejected by the builders has now become the cornerstone, the most crucial piece.

23

This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.

This is God's work, and it fills our hearts with wonder and awe.

24

This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Today is a gift from God; let's celebrate and find joy in it.

25

Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.

I plead with you, O LORD, rescue us now. Please, O LORD, bless us with prosperity at this very moment.

26

Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.

May joy fill the heart of the one who arrives in the Lord's name: we shower you with blessings from the Lord's home.

27

God is the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.

God, our Lord, has illuminated our path. Let's secure our sacrifices tightly, right up to the altar's horns.

28

Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee.

You are my God, and I will honor you with joy: you are my God, I will lift you high with love.

29

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Express your gratitude to the Lord, for He is kind and His compassion is everlasting.
