Psalm 48, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.

The Lord is truly magnificent, deserving of our highest praises. Let's celebrate Him in His sacred city, on His holy mountain.

2

Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

Mount Zion, in its majestic beauty, fills the world with joy. Nestled in the northern lands, it's the city of our mighty King.

3

God is known in her palaces for a refuge.

In her majestic halls, God is recognized as a sanctuary.

4

For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together.

Behold, the rulers gathered, moving forward in unity.

5

They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away.

Witnessing the event, they were filled with awe and confusion; overwhelmed, they quickly fled.

6

Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.

They were gripped by terror and agony, akin to a woman in the throes of childbirth.

7

Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.

You shatter the mighty vessels of Tarshish with a mere breath from the east.

8

As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah.

Just as we've heard, we've also witnessed in the city of our Almighty Lord, in the city of our God: He will secure it eternally. Pause and reflect.

9

We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.

In the heart of your sacred place, O God, we've deeply felt your tender love.

10

According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness.

God, your name is praised everywhere on earth because of your fairness and justice.

11

Let mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments.

May Mount Zion burst with joy, and may Judah's daughters be filled with happiness, because of your righteous judgments.

12

Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof.

Explore Zion, circle around her, and count her majestic towers.

13

Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.

Take a good look at her strong walls, admire her grand palaces; so you can share its beauty with the next generation.

14

For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.

Our God, forever ours, will lovingly guide us, even to our final breath.
