Psalm 4, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.

Listen to me, God, my beacon of fairness. You've given me space when I was suffocated by troubles. Please, show me kindness and pay attention to my plea.

2

O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.

Hey, humanity, when will you stop belittling my worth? When will you stop chasing after illusions and lies? Pause and reflect.

3

But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him.

Be aware that God has chosen the devout for Himself. He will listen when I reach out to Him.

4

Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

Tremble, and do not sin. Reflect deeply within yourself on your bed before sleep, and be still. Pause and ponder.

5

Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.

Offer the right sacrifices, and place your unwavering faith in God.

6

There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.

Many ask, "Who will bring us happiness?" Lord, let your loving smile shine on us.

7

Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.

You've filled my heart with joy, even more than when their harvest and wine were plentiful.

8

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

I will rest peacefully and sleep soundly, for only you, LORD, provide me with true safety.
