Psalm 88, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
O lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:
My God, my savior, I've poured out my heart to you, day and night, in tears and pleas.
Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;
Please hear my prayer, lend your ear to my heartfelt plea.
For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.
My heart is heavy with sorrows, and I feel my life nearing its end.
I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength:
I am grouped with those descending into darkness, feeling as powerless as a man devoid of strength.
Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand.
Abandoned among the dead, like those slain in their graves whom you remember no more, cut off from your divine touch.
Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.
You've placed me in the deepest abyss, shrouded in darkness and despair.
Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.
Your anger weighs heavily on me, and I'm overwhelmed by the waves of your trials. Pause and reflect.
Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.
You've distanced my friends from me, making me repulsive to them. I feel trapped, unable to break free.
Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction: LORD, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched out my hands unto thee.
My heart aches with sorrow and pain: God, I reach out to you every day, my hands extended in prayer.
Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah.
Will you reveal miracles to those who have passed? Can the departed rise and express their gratitude to you? Pause and reflect.
Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction?
Can your love be proclaimed in death? Or your loyalty amidst ruin?
Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
Can your miracles be recognized in the shadows? And your goodness, can it be seen in a place where memories fade?
But unto thee have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee.
I have called out to you, O LORD, with all my heart; and each morning, my prayer will reach you before anything else.
LORD, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me?
God, why do you cast me off? Why do you hide your face from me?
I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.
Since my early years, I've been tormented and on the brink of death. Your terrifying trials have left me utterly confused and distressed.
Thy fierce wrath goeth over me; thy terrors have cut me off.
Your intense anger engulfs me; your terrors have destroyed me.
They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together.
Every day, they surrounded me like a relentless tide, encircling me as one.
Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.
You've distanced my loved ones and friends from me, plunging my familiar faces into the shadows.
