Psalm 22, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far from helping me, so far from my cries for help?

2

O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

God, I call out to you all day, but you don't seem to hear. Even at night, my pleas don't cease.

3

But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.

You are sacred, oh you who dwell in the adoration of Israel.

4

Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.

Our ancestors believed in you; they trusted, and you rescued them.

5

They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.

They called out to you in tears and you saved them. They put their faith in you and were never let down.

6

But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

I feel like nothing more than a worm, not even a man; I am scorned by others and rejected by society.

7

All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,

Everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads, saying,

8

He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

He placed his faith in God, believing wholeheartedly that God would rescue him. Now, let God save him, since God delights in him.

9

But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.

You are the one who brought me into this world, giving me hope and comfort in my mother's loving embrace.

10

I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly.

From the moment I was born, you were my God, chosen for me even before I left my mother's womb.

11

Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.

Stay close to me, for difficulties are approaching and I have no one else to rely on.

12

Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.

I'm surrounded by numerous threats, like powerful bulls from Bashan closing in on me.

13

They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.

They stared at me, their mouths wide open, like a hungry, roaring lion ready to attack.

14

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

I feel as if I'm spilling over, my body disjointed and out of sync. My heart is soft, melting away within me.

15

My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

I feel utterly drained, as if all my energy has evaporated; my mouth is parched, my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You've led me to the brink of death, to the very edge of oblivion.

16

For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

Like dogs, they surround me; a gang of evil men has closed in on me. They have pierced my hands and my feet.

17

I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.

I can count every bone in my body, as they stare and gloat over me.

18

They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

They divided my clothes among themselves, gambling for my robe.

19

But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.

Please, Lord, don't distance yourself from me. You are my strength, hurry and come to my aid.

20

Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.

Save my life from the sword; rescue my one precious life from the power of the dogs.

21

Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.

Rescue me from the jaws of danger, for you have listened to my pleas amidst my greatest fears.

22

I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.

I will proudly share your name with my brothers and sisters; amidst our gathering, I will express my gratitude and admiration for you.

23

Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.

If you respect the Lord, celebrate Him; everyone from Jacob's lineage, honor Him; and revere Him, all descendants of Israel.

24

For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.

He never ignored or scorned the suffering of the tormented; He never turned a blind eye. Instead, He listened intently when they called out to Him.

25

My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.

In the midst of a large gathering, my admiration for you will be my anthem. I'll fulfill my promises in front of those who respect Him.

26

The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.

Those who are humble will be nourished and content. They will express their gratitude to the Lord they seek. Your heart will experience eternal life.

27

All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.

Every corner of the earth will recall and return to the Lord. Every family across all nations will bow in reverence before you.

28

For the kingdom is the LORD’s: and he is the governor among the nations.

The kingdom belongs to God, and He rules over all nations.

29

All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.

Those who live in abundance will feast and honor Him. Those who return to the earth will kneel before Him. No one can sustain their own life.

30

A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.

His legacy will be carried forward by those who follow him; they will be recognized as God's own generation.

31

They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

They will arrive, passionately proclaiming His goodness to the future generations, affirming that He has indeed accomplished this.
