Psalm 124, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;
Let Israel now say it: if it weren't for God's unwavering support on our side,
If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:
If God hadn't stood by us when people turned against us, we would've been lost.
Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
They would have swallowed us alive, fueled by their burning anger against us.
Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:
the waters would have drowned us, and the torrent would have swept over us.
Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
Then the raging, arrogant waves would have swept right over us.
Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
Praise the LORD, who has protected us from becoming victims of their cruelty.
Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
Our spirit has soared free like a bird from a hunter's trap; the trap is shattered, and we have found our freedom.
Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
Our strength comes from the LORD, the divine creator of the skies and the land.
