Psalm 74, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?
Oh Lord, why have you abandoned us forever? Why does your wrath burn so fiercely against your own flock?
Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
Remember your people, whom you've loved since the beginning. Your chosen ones, whom you've saved. This is Mount Zion, your home.
Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.
Come and walk through these endless ruins; see all the harm the enemy has done in our sacred place.
Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs.
Your foes bellow within your gatherings, displaying their symbols as if they were signs.
A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.
A man gained renown for his strength and determination in chopping down the densest of forests.
But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.
Now, they ruthlessly destroy its beautiful carvings with axes and hammers.
They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground.
They've set your sacred place ablaze, tarnishing it by reducing your holy dwelling to ashes.
They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.
In their hearts, they conspired to annihilate us. They've reduced God's sacred places to ashes across the land.
We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.
We can't see our guiding symbols, there's no prophet left among us, and no one knows how long this will last.
O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?
Oh Lord, how long will the enemy keep insulting you? Will the foe disrespect your name without end?
Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom.
Why do you hold back your helping hand? Don't hide it, extend it to us.
For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.
From time immemorial, God has been my sovereign, bringing hope and redemption to the world around me.
Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.
With your mighty power, you split the sea; you crushed the sea monsters' heads.
Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.
You shattered the mighty leviathan, feeding its remains to the wilderness dwellers.
Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers.
You split open springs and streams; you dried up powerful rivers.
The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun.
You own the day, you own the night; you've crafted both the sun's bright light.
Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.
You've drawn the edges of the earth, crafting both the warmth of summer and the chill of winter.
Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name.
Remember, Lord, your enemies have insulted you and the ignorant have disrespected your name.
O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever.
Please don't abandon your innocent ones to the cruelty of evil people; never forget your humble followers.
Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.
Honor the sacred promise, for the world's dark corners are full of the haunts of cruelty and violence.
O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name.
Please, don't let those who are burdened feel shame: allow the less fortunate to find joy in your name.
Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily.
Rise up, O God, defend your honor. Don't forget how the ignorant mock you every day.
Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually.
Don't ignore your enemies' threats; their hostility towards you is constantly growing.
