Psalm 80, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth.

Listen closely, O Guiding Light of Israel, you who guide us like a shepherd guides his flock. You, who reside among the angels, let your brilliance shine upon us.

2

Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us.

Before the tribes of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, awaken your might and come and rescue us.

3

Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.

God, guide us back to you. Let your radiant love light our path, and we will find salvation.

4

O LORD God of hosts, how long wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people?

O Almighty Lord, when will your anger towards your people's prayers end?

5

Thou feedest them with the bread of tears; and givest them tears to drink in great measure.

You nourish them with sorrow, making them consume their own tears in abundance.

6

Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselves.

You've turned us into a conflict for our neighbors; our enemies mock us openly.

7

Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.

Please guide us back, O Mighty God, let your radiant love light our path; then we will find salvation.

8

Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it.

You lovingly uprooted a vine from Egypt, courageously expelled the foreigners, and tenderly planted it anew.

9

Thou preparedst room before it, and didst cause it to take deep root, and it filled the land.

You made space for it, helped it to grow strong and deep, and it spread across the land.

10

The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars.

The hills lay blanketed in its shadow, its branches standing tall and majestic like the finest cedar trees.

11

She sent out her boughs unto the sea, and her branches unto the river.

She stretched her arms towards the ocean, and her fingers reached out to touch the river.

12

Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her?

Why did you destroy her protective walls, leaving her vulnerable to anyone passing by, who can easily harm her?

13

The boar out of the wood doth waste it, and the wild beast of the field doth devour it.

The wild pig from the forest destroys it, and the field's untamed creature consumes it.

14

Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine;

Please come back to us, Almighty God. From your heavenly throne, see and care for this vine we cherish.

15

And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou madest strong for thyself.

The garden you've nurtured with your own hands, and the branch you've strengthened for your own purpose.

16

It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.

Engulfed in flames, chopped down, they wither and die under the weight of your disapproval.

17

Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself.

May your guiding hand be with the chosen one, the one you've strengthened for your purpose.

18

So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.

We won't turn away from you; revive us, and we'll honor your name.

19

Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.

Please guide us back, O LORD, our mighty God, let your radiant love light our path; and we will find salvation.
