Psalm 55, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication.
Please listen to my plea, God, and don't ignore my heartfelt request.
Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;
Listen to me, hear my words: I'm filled with sorrow, my complaints are loud and clear.
Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.
Due to the harsh words of my foes and the cruelty of the wicked, they burden me with their wrongdoings and despise me in their anger.
My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.
Deep within, my heart aches intensely, and I'm overwhelmed by the fear of death.
Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.
I'm consumed by terror and shaking, drowned in my own dread.
And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.
I wished, if only I had wings like a dove, I could escape and find peace.
Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.
Indeed, I would escape to the solitude of the wilderness, lost in its vastness. Pause and reflect.
I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.
I'd quickly flee from the raging storm and chaos.
Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
Lord, shatter their unity and confuse their speech, for I've witnessed chaos and conflict in the city.
Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
Throughout the day and night, they wander around its walls, causing trouble and spreading sadness within.
Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.
The heart of the city pulses with evil; lies and trickery never leave its streets.
For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:
It wasn't a foe who insulted me; I could have endured that. It wasn't someone who despised me that boasted against me; I could have hidden from them.
But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.
But it was you, my equal, my mentor, and my friend.
We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.
We shared heartfelt advice and journeyed together to God's home.
Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
May death seize those who do evil; may they go down alive into the depths of hell, for their homes and hearts are filled with wickedness.
As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me.
In my heart, I'll reach out to God; I trust that He will rescue me.
Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.
I'll pour my heart out in prayer, from dawn till dusk, and even at noon. I'll shout out loud, knowing He will always listen to me.
He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.
He has saved my life peacefully from the battle against me, even though many fought against me.
God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.
God, eternal and unchanging, will hear their cries and bring them hardship. For they remain unchanged, and their lack of transformation leads them to not fear God.
He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.
He betrayed those who trusted him, breaking his sacred promise.
The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.
His speech was as sweet as honey, but his heart was filled with conflict. His words were gentle as a caress, yet they hid the sharpness of a blade.
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Give all your worries to God, for He will support you. He will always protect those who do right, ensuring they stand firm.
But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.
But you, my God, will cast these violent and deceitful men into the abyss of ruin. They won't even live half their lives. Yet, in you, I place my unwavering faith.
