Psalm 40, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
In my patience, I longed for God. He leaned close, hearing my heartfelt plea.
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
He lovingly rescued me from a terrifying abyss, from the sticky, muddy depths, and placed me firmly on solid ground, guiding my steps with certainty.
And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
He has gifted me a fresh melody of praise for our God. Many will witness it, feel awe, and find faith in the Lord.
Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Fortunate is the person who places their faith in God, ignoring the arrogant and those who embrace deceit.
Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
God, your miracles and thoughts towards us are countless. Even if I tried to express them all, they're simply too numerous to mention.
Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
You don't seek sacrifices or offerings; instead, you've opened my ears to listen. You don't demand burnt offerings or sin offerings.
Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,
With a heartfelt sigh, I declared, "Here I am, just as the pages of the sacred book have foretold my arrival."
I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
I find joy in fulfilling your wishes, my God. Indeed, your teachings are deeply rooted in my heart.
I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.
In front of a vast crowd, I've passionately shared the message of righteousness. Lord, you know I've never held back my words.
I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.
I've openly shared your goodness in my heart; I've proclaimed your unwavering faith and salvation. I've never hidden your love and truth from the masses.
Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.
Please don't hold back your compassion from me, O LORD. Let your love and honesty always protect me.
For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.
Countless wrongs surround me, my mistakes grip me so tightly that I can't even lift my gaze. They outnumber the hairs on my head, leaving my heart overwhelmed and defeated.
Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me.
Lord, I beg you, rescue me with joy; hurry, Lord, I need your help.
Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.
May those who seek to harm me feel shame and confusion; may those who wish me ill be repelled and humiliated.
Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.
May those who mock me, saying "Aha, aha!", be left ruined and appalled as the reward of their own shame.
Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified.
May all who seek you find joy and happiness in your presence. May those who cherish your salvation always proclaim, "Praise the Lord in all His glory."
But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.
Though I am humble and in need, God never forgets me. He is my support and my savior; I pray He comes swiftly, my God.
