Psalm 69, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.
God, rescue me, for I'm drowning in my own despair.
I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
I'm drowning in a sea of troubles, with no solid ground beneath me. I'm lost in a stormy ocean, overwhelmed by its relentless waves.
I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.
I'm exhausted from my tears, my throat is parched, my eyes are tired, longing for the sight of my God.
They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.
Those who despise me for no reason outnumber the strands of my hair. Those who wish to harm me unjustly are powerful. Yet, I returned what I never stole.
O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.
God, you're aware of my mistakes and nothing I've done wrong is hidden from you.
Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.
Please, Lord God of all, don't let those who trust in you feel shame because of me. Don't let those who seek you be confused because of my actions, O God of Israel.
Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.
Because of you, I've endured criticism; my face is shrouded in shame.
I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother’s children.
I feel like a stranger among my own siblings, like an outsider to my mother's children.
For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
My passion for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you weigh heavily on me.
When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.
When I cried and disciplined myself through fasting, it only brought me shame.
I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.
I wore sackcloth as my clothing, and I became a joke to those around me.
They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.
Those who judge me from their high seats slander me; I've become the mockery in the drunken laughter.
But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.
In my heart, I reach out to you, Lord, at the right moment. Please, God, in your endless kindness, listen to me and let me feel the truth of your salvation.
Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.
Pull me from this sticky mess, don't let me drown: save me from those who despise me, and from the overwhelming waves.
Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.
Please don't let me drown in life's overwhelming floods, or be consumed by its deepest fears, and don't let despair close its jaws around me.
Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.
Listen to me, O Lord, your love is beautiful. Show me your endless compassion.
And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.
Please, don't turn away from me, your humble servant. I'm in deep distress; hear my plea quickly.
Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.
Come close to my heart, save me. Rescue me from those who wish me harm.
Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee.
You've seen my humiliation, my embarrassment, and my disgrace; you're aware of all those who oppose me.
Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
My heart is shattered by criticism; I'm overwhelmed with sorrow. I searched for sympathy, but no one cared; I sought comfort, but found none.
They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
They fed me bitterness instead of food; and when I was parched, they offered me sour vinegar to quench my thirst.
Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.
May their blessings turn into obstacles, and their prosperity become their downfall.
Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.
May their vision be clouded, unable to see clearly; and let them be constantly filled with fear and uncertainty.
Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.
Unleash your fury on them, let your intense anger consume them.
Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.
May their homes become empty and abandoned, with no one living in their tents.
For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.
They torment the one you've punished, and they mock the pain of those you've hurt.
Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.
Let their wrongs pile up, keep them far from your goodness.
Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.
May they be erased from the book of life, never to be counted among the good.
But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.
I'm downtrodden and filled with sadness. God, lift me up with your saving grace.
I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
With joy in my heart, I'll sing for God, and express my gratitude to make His greatness known.
This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.
The Lord will find more joy in this song of thanks than in the sacrifice of an ox or bull with horns and hoofs.
The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.
Those who are modest will witness this and rejoice: and those who seek God will find their hearts filled with life.
For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.
God listens to the cries of the poor and never ignores those who are trapped.
Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.
May the skies and the land express their admiration for Him, as should the oceans and all creatures that inhabit them.
For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.
God promises to rescue Zion, reconstruct Judah's cities, so people can live there and call it their own.
The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein.
The children of those who serve Him will inherit the land, and those who love His name will make their home there.
