Psalm 56, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me.

God, please show me your mercy. I feel overwhelmed and oppressed by others who seem to be against me every day.

2

Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.

Every day, my foes seek to consume me, for their numbers are great. They challenge me constantly, oh Divine One.

3

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

Whenever fear grips me, I find solace in your trust.

4

In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

I find joy in God's teachings, I trust Him completely; I won't be afraid of any harm people can cause me.

5

Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.

Each day, they twist my words, their minds filled with harmful intentions towards me.

6

They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.

They unite in secret, watching my every move, lying in wait to take my life.

7

Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.

Will they evade through their wrongdoings? In your fury, bring down those who err, O God.

8

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?

You know every step I've taken, every path I've roamed. Can't you collect my tears, store them as precious? Aren't they recorded in your book?

9

When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.

When I call out to you in my pain, my foes will retreat. I am certain of this, for I feel God's support with me.

10

In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word.

With heartfelt gratitude, I will honor God's teachings. In the Lord, I will joyfully celebrate His wisdom.

11

In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

I've placed my faith in God, so I won't fear what others can do to me.

12

Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.

God, I am bound by the vows I made to you. I will joyfully sing your praises.

13

For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

You've saved my life from death; won't you also keep me from stumbling? So I can live and walk with God in the brightness of life.
