Psalm 140, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;

Lord, save me from those who wish me harm; protect me from those who are violent.

2

Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.

They constantly plot evil in their hearts, always ready to stir up conflict.

3

They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.

Their words are as sharp and deadly as a snake's bite, their speech filled with venomous deceit. Pause and reflect.

4

Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

Lord, protect me from the wicked and save me from violent people who plan to trip me up.

5

The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.

Arrogant ones have set traps for me, hidden ropes to trip me up. They've laid a net along my path, hoping to ensnare me. Pause and reflect.

6

I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.

I told the Lord, "You are my God, please listen to my heartfelt prayers."

7

O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

My Lord, my God, you are the power behind my salvation. In the heat of battle, you've been my shield, protecting me.

8

Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

Please, Lord, don't let the wicked get what they want. Don't let their plans succeed, or they'll become too proud. Pause and reflect.

9

As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

May those who surround me be consumed by the harm their own words intend for me.

10

Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

Let burning coals fall on them; let them be thrown into the fire, into deep pits, never to rise again.

11

Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

Don't let a slanderer gain a foothold on earth; let disaster hunt down the violent one and bring him down.

12

I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

I'm certain that God will stand up for those who are suffering and defend the rights of the underprivileged.

13

Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

Indeed, those who live rightly will express gratitude for your name; those who are virtuous will bask in your presence.
