Psalm 71, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.

In you, my God, I place all my faith. Please, never let me be put to shame.

2

Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.

Please, guide me with your truth and help me find a way out. Listen to my plea and rescue me.

3

Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.

Be my steadfast sanctuary, where I can always find refuge. You've promised to protect me, for you are my unyielding rock and fortress.

4

Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.

God, please save me from the grasp of evil and heartless people.

5

For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth.

You've been my beacon of hope, my dear Lord, my unwavering faith since my early days.

6

By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.

From the moment I was born, you've been my support. You, who guided me from my mother's womb, are forever deserving of my praise.

7

I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.

Many are amazed by me, but you are my safe haven.

8

Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.

May my words overflow with your praises and my every moment be filled with your glory.

9

Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.

Don't abandon me in my old age; don't leave me when my energy is gone.

10

For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together,

My enemies speak against me; those who lie in wait to take my life plot together,

11

Saying, God hath forsaken him: persecute and take him; for there is none to deliver him.

They say, "God has left him! Chase and capture him; no one will rescue him."

12

O God, be not far from me: O my God, make haste for my help.

God, please stay close to me. I urgently need your help.

13

Let them be confounded and consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt.

May those who are against me be put to shame and destroyed; let those who wish me harm wear their shame and disgrace like a cloak for their ill intentions towards me.

14

But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.

I will always hold onto hope, and my praises for you will only grow stronger.

15

My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof.

I will passionately speak of your righteousness and salvation every day, for its vastness is beyond my comprehension.

16

I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.

With the Lord's strength as my guide, I will speak of your pure and unmatched righteousness.

17

O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.

God, since childhood you've been my teacher, and I've always shared the marvels of your deeds.

18

Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.

As I age and my hair turns grey, God, please don't abandon me. Let me share your strength with the people of today, and your power with all who will follow.

19

Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!

Your goodness, God, is beyond measure, and your deeds are incredible. Who can compare to you, O God!

20

Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

You, who have guided me through immense and painful challenges, will breathe life into me once more, lifting me from the deepest pits of despair.

21

Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.

You will boost my significance and provide me with solace in all aspects of my life.

22

I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.

I will joyfully honor you, my God, with heartfelt music, celebrating your truth. I will sing for you, O Divine One of Israel, strumming melodies on my harp.

23

My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed.

When I sing your praises, my lips will overflow with joy, and my soul, which you have saved, will be filled with gratitude.

24

My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt.

My words will sing of your fairness all day, for those who wish me harm are left in confusion and disgrace.
