Psalm 123, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.

I raise my eyes to you, the one living in the skies, with hope and reverence.

2

Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.

Just as loyal servants watch their masters' hands for guidance, and a young girl looks to her mistress for direction, we too, keep our gaze fixed on the Lord, our God, patiently waiting for His compassion and mercy.

3

Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.

Please, Lord, show us compassion, for we have endured more than enough contempt from others.

4

Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

Our hearts are overwhelmed with the mockery of the complacent and the disdain of the arrogant.
