Psalm 38, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

O lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

Please, Lord, don't scold me in your anger or discipline me in your fury.

2

For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.

Your arrows have pierced me deeply, and your hand presses down hard on me.

3

There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.

My body aches with your displeasure, and my bones find no peace due to my wrongdoings.

4

For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

My wrongdoings weigh heavily on me, like a burden too great to bear.

5

My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.

Because of my foolishness, my wounds stink and fester, causing me unbearable pain.

6

I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

I am deeply distressed, burdened heavily; I spend my days consumed by sorrow.

7

For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh.

My body is consumed by a dreadful sickness, and there's no health left in me.

8

I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

I'm weak and deeply hurt; my heart's unrest has led me to cry out in pain.

9

Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee.

God, you see all my deepest wishes and hear my silent cries.

10

My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.

I'm breathless, my energy is drained; even the light in my eyes has dimmed.

11

My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

Those I love and my friends avoid my pain; even my family keeps their distance.

12

They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.

Those who wish me harm set traps for me, and those who want to hurt me spread lies and deceit all day.

13

But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.

But I, like a man who cannot hear, remained oblivious; and I was like a man who cannot speak, staying silent.

14

Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.

I felt like a man who couldn't hear, with no reply or defense leaving my lips.

15

For in thee, O LORD, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God.

In you, my God, I place my trust, knowing you will listen to me.

16

For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.

I pleaded, "Listen to me, or else they'll celebrate my downfall. When I stumble, they only feel bigger and stronger."

17

For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.

I'm on the verge of breaking down, my sadness never leaves my sight.

18

For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

I will openly admit my wrongdoings; I will deeply regret my sins.

19

But mine enemies are lively, and they are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.

My foes are energetic and powerful, and those who unjustly despise me have grown in number.

20

They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is.

Those who repay kindness with cruelty oppose me, for I choose to walk the path of goodness.

21

Forsake me not, O LORD: O my God, be not far from me.

Please don't abandon me, Lord. My God, stay close to me.

22

Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.

Please hurry to assist me, O Lord, my savior, I urgently need you.
